thanks sonic,
I pressed the go button last night so we shall see later today what the lens really looks like - with amazon, at least it can go back easily if all is not well.
to others who responded, many thanks for the helpful input. The driver in the end that made me decide on trying the Tamron was the VC and the fact the Sigma did not do as well as the other three in the head to head run by nikonguy (the utube sessions) and, given the UK pricing, the Sigma's advantage over the Tamron goes away.
thanks sonic, br br I pressed the go button last ... (

I think you have made the correct choice , I will keep watching this post , please update when you have had a play with your new toy
I use one on my canon bodies and absolutely love it, very sharp and vc is the reason I use it. Bought mine from Canada and sent it there for service(wrestler fell on me and causing damage) and they covered the damage
I know I'm coming in after the fact, but I normally use this lens on canon 5dmiii with tack sharp results. However, I used it this past weekend on a 70d and was disappointed for the first time. But, to be fair, it was night shooting, hand-held, in huge crowds, at low SS, and high ISO. Not the best conditions for sharp photos. It was probably not the lens, but the shooter;)
I think you'll love it!
I use the tamron on 5d m2 an 70d. It is a heavy lens, for me works well on both cameras especially in low light where the VC really does kick in half second hand held gives an high amount of keepers. I find very little difference between this and the canon equiv optically, a little slower on focus but very quiet lens and again the VC is just exceptional . Compared to the canon 24 105 which I do like the tamron is a better lens.
You will not regret your purchase
Depends if you want the best picture or the best price. To me Nikon rules and my daughter Canon rules.
Sigma has a beautiful new lens coming sour 24-70 2.0 I waiting for more detail.
Had mine on a Nikon D610 for over a year and never had a problem. Brilliant lens!

It is evident that in regard to quality Nikon and Canon are top. Lenses today are very well made and I have said before that I have not used a modern lens that has disappointed me, regardless of manufacturer. I did my part and the lens did its part.
Optical quality I am sure is not that far among the lenses that were tested and those were Nikon, Canon, Tamron and Sigma. Tamron wisely added VR to its lens and that along can make a significant difference when hand holding the lens. I have no experience with these lenses except for the lens made by Nikon and it was a short experience using my D7000. I noticed that the lens has a great optical quality and it is very well made although heavy when hand holding the camera. For an amateur and especially a casual shooter the price is very high.
I like the VR feature with Tamron. That along should make a big difference and that was more than obvious during testing. Buying the lens brand new offers the buyer a 6 years warranty and Tamron should take care of any issues should they arise during that period of time.
Professionals will not hesitate going Nikon or Canon not saying that they could also opt for the Tamron lens since it is convenient having the VR feature.
Amateurs not going for Canon or Nikon should find the Tamron lens a useful addition and the photo samples I have seen out of the lens have been very good to my eyes.
I repeat, I have only used the Nikon lens and for a short period of time but I am quite sure I could have done as well with the Tamron for my photographic style.
I have seven lenses for my Canon and the Tamron VC 24-70 is the one that I keep on the body to grab and use when I need a quick shot that I hadn't planned on. It is a little heavy, but it takes damn good pictures and is a bargain, price wise.
The Tamron SP 24-70mm VC is my favorite lens for my street photography. My full frame, is the Canon 6D, and it is really at home on this body. As for my cropped body, the 7D Mark II, the lens is considered "good". I sent the lens back to Tamron, to have it tuned to the 7D Mark II specs. It came back much sharper. With Tamron lenses it is better to send it back, rather send back the copy you get and try other copies. This lens is also a bit on the heavy side, but manageable. As a f2.8 lens the barrel is large, and easy to hold, and zoom on any body. If you experience any problems with this lens, call Tamron, and talk to a tech. It is a SP lens, which is their best lenses.

That was actually what started me looking - the Tamron got 5 stars! The magazine is PhotoPlus and is helpful in a lot of ways but still an "ad-fest"

Bill - I appreciate your taking time to reply and you have piqued my curiosity and revealed yet another area of ignorance. While I have heard about micro adjustments to focusing to "mate" a particular lens to a particular individual camera body, I had not heard of "tuning to specs" in a generic way. Does this mean it became less effective on the 6d FF after the tuning?. Do many people do this and does it apply to all lens FLs ??
thanks
General reply to all on this post - again, I really appreciate the quick and wide ranging input - Got it out of the box yesterday so will post something when I have had a play
