Perhaps a change in terms is in order. Global warming and climate change are not particularly scary conditions with the obvious procrastination regarding how we respond to their impact. I am convinced that the issue is far more severe and terms like climate destabilization, disintegration or climate destruction are in order. Only by escalating the magnitude of the problem will humanity seriously begin the process of fixing climate destruction, if it is even possible.

As Craven says, we will only get one chance to fix the problem so here are a couple things that we can do now.

Elon Musk has introduced a new product called "Powerwall", a solar charged battery available in 10kW increments (orders now being taken at $3500 per 10kW) that could replace dependency on the current power grid. His claim is that the technology can be scaled up to national and world-wide levels and he is building a factory to get the process started.

Get over our morbid fear of nuclear energy. Fact: 32 people died from RADIATION causes in Chernobyl, the worst nuclear accident to date, 0, that's zero, from RADIATION causes in Fukishima. And yet we continue the morbid fear of all things nuclear. If we can overcome this fear there is a 50 years old nuclear technology available to us that can completely eliminate fossil fuels as an energy source for power and transportation combined. So, in short, these two ideas together could completely eliminate our dependence on fossil fuels throughout the world. Will we act, the cynic in me says not until its a tangible crisis, the optimist says we must act and act now. BTW, guess who is using the technology developed by us, using profits from rare earth exports among everything else, none other than China. What does it take for Americans to demand action when viable solutions stare them in the face to overcome the nuclear bogeyman. Are we going to let China sell us our energy after we run out of oil?
