I have a MAC book air using the new version of I photo. I am looking for suggestions on free photo software recommendations. I like taking photos, but am not a pro or semi pro. Want something that is rather easy to adjust and arrange the pics I take.

The free Picasa does a lot, for sure. If you download, do directly from Google:

I agree Picasa from Google is very good and is free. You can also do a fair amount in iPhoto (Now called simply Photos). You can stick with iPhoto for a while before you go to something more sophisticated.
Thanks. When I photo upgraded to photo, it changed the dates on some photos and re arranged others. I guess I should go to Apple Store before changing.

Make an appointment before you go. Based on my experience, you will find fantastic customer support from Apple. You can also call for help since you have a new Mac, but the Apple store is usually a great experience, Customer Service like it should be.
IPhoto is still on your computer although it's icon is gone and Photos icon is present. The editing function is very different, but not bad once you get used to it. You can find iPhoto listed in your Applications.
The biggest issue I have with Photos is that you can't easily email from it. Apple want the Photos in the Cloud and to be viewed on social media.
Also, I find that Photos will copy all your pictures and will thereby take up a huge amount of space on your hard drive (which will also have the same photos that iPhoto does.)
Picasa simply doesn't work as well on an Apple as it did on my PC.
Your camera may have come with software. If so get in on your computer if it's not there already and take it for a spin.

Ksocha, email available from "File" menu (Share) or from "Share" icon on upper right of screen with a square and arrow thru it. You can also use "Export" to various destinations. Editing is the same as iPhoto with a few more capabilities...i.e. click on "down arrows" for more functions. All text is smaller to save desktop space. Photos is not a Photoshop pixel editor or layers editor but is a simple, easy to use function. It is not great but OK.
My iMac 27 has slowed considerably since the update to Photos. I had no issues with iPhoto but find similar problems to the other Hogs with Photos. Unfortunately, I haven't found any way to keep iPhotos and still updater the OS with having Photos taking up space and apparently duplicating the entire library. Plus, changes made in iPhoto will not effect the Photos file.

You might look at Photo Scape. They have a MAC version and it is free.
If you are a Mac user, use PhotoScape X for Mac and VideoBlend for Mac.
Linda, you introduce an important subject. Often when you get software through a 3rd party like CNet or Freewarefiles.com, etc., they load it up with a lot of junk, some of which may include malware. Even Adobe Flash comes with McAfee anti-virus. Every update, I have to "Decline" the McAfee. (I already have the superior Zonealarm and Malwarebytes. "I don wan no stinkin' McAfee.")

I still use iPhoto as I hate the new Photos app. iPhoto is still easier to use.
Ray.
