My old 2009 I Mac is getting tired, I bought the nikon D810 and I am not able to down load my large RAW 36mb files, I use Lightroom 4 and NIK as my editing software. So I am looking to purchase a new IMac, what is your thoughts an the 27 Retina Imac 5K, I do not do any gaming, I am looking for a Mac just for my photography. I also have a few external hard drives that I back up all my photos. Any thoughts on how to or any upgrade to add, and is the Retina 5K worth it. Thanks UHH

Apple is bringing out its new OS El Capitan in the fall, which according Apple will work on your 2009, please check their list, and will increase 'speed'.
If you haven't maxed out your Ram that is one thing that can breathe life into an older machine.

Do some digging on the Apple page on the new OS and your machine before you purchase anyway.

I have a Mid 2010 MBP and just recently played build your own at Apple but I am not giving into computer GAS at this time.

Best of luck on your choice.

Thank you. I upgraded to the Yosemite a few months back and lost my aperture program that I loved. Along with NIK this worked for me! Not being a computer guy. I just want to be able to download my large D810 photos. Thank You

I have a Retina screen on my iPad but not on my MacBook laptop. Day-to-day the difference is not huge, EXCEPT when I use Lightroom and similar programs for post-processing digital photos. Based on that experience, my next Apple laptop or desktop will have a Retina screen.

It's convenient, expensive, and the Retina 5K will make all of your text in the applications show up really really tiny, and the screen will have a reduced color gamut compared to other systems.

So if you are a casual user of photo editing software and need the computer for all sorts of things, the 5K is pretty cool. But if your primary use is photo editing, there far better choices out there.

I purchased this unit from B&H about 4 months ago and love it. My only complaint is that I have little bubble specs on the screen, but they are not noticeable when the unit is turned on. I purchased a Dell 27" screen as my second screen for the iMac and this works well.

I certainly agree with this. Just a week ago I upgraded my ram from 4 gigs to 16 and the difference is amazing. Next stop will be a SSD. The total cost when done will be less than $400.00 and I expect it to fly. My laptop is an early 2011 MBP that works flawlessly so why not give it a tune up and run it for a few more years. Thats one thing I really like about Apple computers, they just keep working so the cost of ownership in my case has been much less then when I used PC.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I knew when I bought the nikon D810 I would have to upgrade my computer, I mainly 95% of time my computer is for my photos.

My priorities would be:
1st Memory (16 GB minimum)
2nd Monitor size: 27" preferred
3rd SSD drive - the larger the better
4th External Thunderbolt RAID 5 for image storage (As I understand, it is as fast as an internal hard drive)
5th Retina display.

The best piece of photographic equipment I purchased to date is my iMac 27". It was used, but by a friend who I know took great care of it. As for Retina, I don't have it, but hear raves about it. My only question is does it look all that much better for photography? Since I don't have the need to purchase one at this time, I've not looked into the Retina display. I've only heard about it's abilities through friends who have systems using it. They love it. However, they don't do the amount of imaging that I do.

So, we're still questioning it's value.

 thanks, this will be my 3rd Imac in the last 15 years not counting my IBook that I fried!(hard drive shot) I know I will purchase very very shortly, I also want to see if the Apple store will credit my MacBook ?that would mean extra Ram? The Apple store will give credit of Old products toward upgrades and New Products? I learned that today.

2009 iMac should have plenty computing power for you, if it is an i5 cpu
Make sure you ms out the ram at 16 gb.
I have a late iMac with i5 cpu and I upgraded myself to a full 16 gb and SSDdrive
Boot time is about 10 second.
