Practice, and I concur on both Northrup's and Peterson's books in Kindle format so you have them as a field reference if you have them on a smartphone. Each is the best $10 you'll spend. More practice and time here at the Hog. And more practice... Repeat...

Depending on the sport, a 70-200 f/2.8 maybe overkill or not enough. Are you indoors and outdoors? Are you near or very far? What sport or sports? Should you get a lens with IS or no IS? Is the burst speed on a 70D long enough or fast enough to capture a few seconds of intense action? Does that burst need apply to your sport and / or shooting style?

If you don't need low light support, you might find the 100-400 II is a better choice for around the same cost of the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II.

Instinct or what, I was just thinking of the same answer myself before reading any of the other replies.

"an art class in color and design.
or some photography books along those lines.
"

And before finding out the OP is a HS AP Photo student.

If you really want to learn photography, learn it's history and tools. And look at tons of examples in photographic art books and published portfolios.

I do not believe anybody will question the fact that the lens you plan on buying will be a very good lens for sports photography among other things.
Nothing will improve your photography more than learning photography. I do not know your level of expertise but if you find that you need to improve on your work or that your images lack then no new camera or lens will make your photography better.

Something to think about. The really great photographers don't even think about composition while they're shooting. Their mind is on what they want their photograph to accomplish. Just read that somewhere, and it's good food for thought. djt

Great photographers, as well as accomplished artists of any medium, don't have to think about composition. It is so firmly engrained, through practice and experience, that it is a second nature to them.

I further the comments about learning photography in addition to considering good glass.

You certainly cannot go wrong with the 70-200 F/2.8 II from Canon - it is probably the best manufactured lens that Canon makes and you will use it for more than sports.

Keep in mind though - "the most important tool in taking great pictures is located 6" directly behind the viewfinder" - improve your shots by improving your knowledge.

Unless you have a body of work thats a vast improvement on what you have posted on the Hog then forget new lenses.
Get a book on composition learn how to use your camera so it does not blow skies. Then master completely what you have already. On what your showing here a new lens aint gonna help ya.

That's an excellent lens, but you will need to shoot a relatively high shutter speed for sports photography, and there will be limited light in some situations, meaning that even f/2.8 will not be not enough aperture, and you probably won't be able to get close enough to use a flash effectively, which means you will have to go to a high ISO, which could become grainy. And it's a HEAVY lens, but it has a monopod/tripod mount screw in the lens, near the lens base. You might want to consider a fast prime lens with a focal length of around 100 mm. Or not. :-)

Practice, Reading on techniques, practice. Master the equipment you have before shelling out $$$ for more equipment.

The 70-200f 2.8 is a good place to start. Nice lens, sharp and good for low light.

What sports are you planning to shoot? This will make a difference in the lenses recommended.

As far as "improve my photography and my photos? " goes go take a LOT of photos, practice, practice and more practice!. Equipment does help make a difference in the quality of your photos but nothing is more important than understanding and learning to use what you have!
