Every year, I plant several tomato plants.... usually a few beefsteaks and a couple of cherry tomatoes. A couple of years ago, I planted a variety called Goliath. They certainly lived up to their name! This particular one measured a little over 17 1/2" in circumference!

Although they were very large, they didn't have that wonderful, acidic taste of the beefsteak variety that I like so much, so, this year it's back to the time-tested varieties.... and my mouth is a waterin'! I love tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches! Nothin' better than a sun-warmed, red-ripe tomato with lots of acid!

Now you've done it, Dewman! I'll be hunting for things all day to satisfy that craving for the taste you mention! We have "Early Girl's" growing nicely but not near ready for the Mayo and Bread yet..... the magic word is 'anticipation', eh?

The tomatoes we get here on the desert often taste like the box or bag they came in. Nebraska, where my wife grew up, has the most wonderful tomatoes - ah I miss them.

Agree. We usually plant 8 and end up with bushels at the same time everyone else has them. Early Girl, Rutgers, Big Boy and Cherry.

At 3,000 ft here in the Sierra Mnts the planting and growing season is late so harvesting is late too - Fortunately we have a Farmers Market once a week from June 1st so we get good home grown tomatoes, tree ripened fruit & super fresh veggies from the farmers in the Valley just 40 mi. down the hill.

Dewman..FWIW nearly all tomatoes have the same acidity..their pH is nearly the same on all varieties..WHat gives them their different taste, for the most part is the sugar content..This year I'm experimenting with Omar's Lebanese & Big Zac..They are easily outdistancing our other varieties..Usually in Oklahoma we like Celebrity variety & Better Boys are also good producers..Looks like another 3-4 weeks before we start seeing much out of our garden..May was record rain here..over 25 inches & very little sunshine..Terrible tomato weather…GOOD LUCK & GOOD EATING!!!

They grow a variety of sweet corn here in Idaho called Bodacious. The kernels are a mixture of white and yellow and it's the best I've ever tasted in my life! Have you ever heard of this type?

I agree about Bodacious..By far the best sweet corn we have planted!!!! We should have apricots in about a week…Cherries came off last week...

Here in Michigan, vegetables abound. My wife does so well with the garden maintenace. We have Two caged "Black-cherry tomatoes, and also caged 26 other tomato plants. Our absolute favorite tomato is the Cherkee-Purple type . We also grow a few "pinapple and Rutgers. Garden is up and growing, can't wait for the tomato "samiches"(as stated earlier, by another HOGG)
