Why is it that the focus point isn't shown in every pic when using ViewNX2...
I have the icon highlighted and despite taking shots with the same settings, some don't show it and some do..??
In some folders, there are no pics that show it at all..
Why is it so random and unreliable...?

Ron, I have other editors & rarely use the Nikon one. However, I did work this much out.....The focus point indicator only works when you view originals--as soon as you do any edit, it disappears. That's what I found anyway. Earl.

Not only this, if you did not use auto focus it won't show the focus point all the time. I guess it is a quirk of view NX2
From the ViewNX2 help file:
"The focus points are displayed in images taken with a Nikon digital single-lens reflex camera or advanced camera with interchangeable lens using a CPU lens, or the COOLPIX A. However, the focus points are not displayed in the following cases:
"The image shot with the Nikon digital single-lens reflex cameras attached to Non-CPU lens.
"The image shot by manual focus.
"The image shot using AF-C (Continuous-servo AF) mode without the in-focus indicator appearing in the viewfinder.
"The image edited using another application."
The item I bolded gives me the most trouble, especially when I use AF-C or continuous shooting when there's only 2/10ths of a second between shots and focus is not locked.

reading between the lines, did i sense something in there about back button focus?
It's never mentioned, Tig, but that's the way I shoot - always.

If there is focus indicator dot at the lower-left in the viewfinder when you snap the shutter, a focus point will be recorded and viewable in post processing. No dot = No focus point. You won't have the dot if you manually focus, release the back-button focus button or AF is not locked on prior to taking the picture.

It could be it was never in focus to begin with, to be sure to set your autofocus to focus fire only, not release, in both af-c and af-s you will soon find how out of focus you are by no fire, and the missed shots, but it will make you better. been there done that. I am not saying you are a bad photographer it is that we all have become dependent on autofocus and assume it is in focus when we pull the trigger.
