Of those two lenses the 24-70 mm on a full frame is the one. I took the ride two years ago using a Canon 60D with a 28-135 mm lens, which is 45 mm-212 mm on a full frame basis. I just looked at the images in Lightroom and found that the vast majority were shot at 28 mm (45 mm on your camera) with most of the rest below or around 50 mm (80 mm on your camera). Your lens being wider than 45 mm will give you even better shots as the scenes are big. If i had to do it again I would take my Sigma 17-50 mm f/2.8 with OS (27-80 mm full frame) as fewer shots would be wide open.

There were a few shot at 70-100 mm or more but they were more "I can see it" record type shots than scenic winners, which were mostly 28-40 mm.
Would a longer lens be useful? To some degree but frankly you do not have a lot of time to change lenses to get a couple long shots and then change back to get the rest. With the quality camera you have with 36 mp, you can shoot at 70 mm and crop.

Hope this is helpful.

We are going for a closed door helicopter ride in June to Kaui I have a D800 and I am stuck on what lens to bring, my choice is Nikon 14-24 2.8 or 24-70 2.8 anyone have any recommendations on which one to bring. Also a polarizing filter will it slow down my shutter speed to much?
thanks

Printer,
A polarizer will only take away maybe 1 full stop. However, if you shoot through the Plexiglas windows with the filter, you may find rainbows or stress lines from the forming process. I know this because I worked for a company that made aircraft windows from military performance jets, airliners, and general service aircraft. Experiment and see the results. When you fly there, shoot out the cabin window and see for yourself: window is only .375 at its thickest! That's all between you and the outside cold world!

Here is one at altitude using a D5100 (crop) 18-300. This photo was taken at 112 mm f7.1 1/800 ISO 250.
Not submitting photo for a contest just an example of what it looks like from the ride. Most of my other one where between 50 and 300mm.

Nice shot Three Deers. I was able to get similar shots in the 200mm range.
