Many new 1080p projectors apparently no longer have normal USB inputs. I want to transfer photos from my computer onto a usb memory stick and show them thru a projector onto a screen so the family can watch together. Is there a direct converter piece for usb to hdmi so I can do this? The ones I saw online have a connecting cable designed to connect and convert a laptop's usb output to plug into a projector's hdmi input. But if I have a regular usb stick with a normal male end I don't think that's what I need. Thanks for your info.

unless I am missing something I don't see how this could work. HDMI passes only video and audio information. You need some device to convert the information on the USB drive to a format that is compatible with HDMI. A cable is not going to do it. Perhaps there are some projectors that can read a USB stick and look for image files, but they would certainly have USB inputs and some sort of controls to select and control the viewing of the files.
I suspect that you will need a computer, although you might find a projector with enough internal circuitry to accept input from a USB stick. I'm sure it will cost more, if there is such a projector available. I would prefer using a computer with HDMI out, though, for more adaptability and reliability, rather than an adaptor to feed HDMI from a USB port on a computer. HDMI carries audio and video, but you may not care about the audio, but I presume that you are buying a 1080p projector to watch movies. Laptop/notebook computers with HDMI out are not hard to find and are not necessarily expensive. If you want to watch movies, get a computer with a DVD drive, too.
Thanks to you both- yes, I don't care about audio, just want to use the projector to show the photos. Trying to avoid the hassle of transferring photos from my desktop to a laptop to a projector. Some projectors have a square-looking usb input (A?) but often say it's only for "maintenance". I'm still looking for an easy solution.

Could you post the specs for the projector you are trying to use? Also, a photo of the projector, showing all the inputs and outputs would help, as well as the model number... There is probably a solution, but it may involve some software or additional hardware in the mix...
Is your projector hooked up to a DVD player? I installed a BluRay burner ($60) on my computer and now can view the pictures directly from a disc. Also allows for a nice slideshow format.

It is not exactly what you are looking for but I believe you can use a device like Chromecast to cast your pictures from a tablet or computer, it uses an HDMI plug.
I do not currently have a projector, trying to find ideas that may work. So if there is no readily available converter/adapter, does anyone have suggestions on HD 1080p projectors out there that do have USB inputs built-in that I could use for photo projections? Thanks!
