It seems to depend on your printer, at least to a point.
I had high hopes for Fuji with my Canon Pro9000, but it just didn't work out, maybe because of the dye-based ink.
At any rate, after some experimenting I've been liking the results from Kodak, Ilford, Inkpress, and Epson. But you'll need to try some yourself, with your printer.
Good luck, Lewis! And have fun doing it!

There are many good quality papers out there. Everything depends on what effect you want to achieve. Try a sample package of multi kinds of papers and see what suits your needs. I like Ilford,Red River to name a few. Good luck !

I use Epson Ultra Matte paper and am very happy with the results. I got a box of Kodak brilliant gloss paper for Christmas and have used it one time, one sheet just to check it out. It was just OK but nothing about it impressed me with it.

I noticed the Fuji appeared brighter than the Kodak, also. But for me the Fuji didn't seem to absorb the ink as well, so I got some smudging. As it turns out, I can get the greater brightness with the Inkpress papers.
I "think" my customers are impressed when there work is delivered on Kodak paper. Maybe my imagination!

I tried all the paper I could buy locally at Kmart, WalMart, drug store and other places. This included Canon, HP, Kodak, Printworks, Quill and others. As Hando Rei, I tried a sample pack. Mine was from Red River. I was impressed the first time I tried their paper with their ICC profiles. Been using their paper for over a year now. Printing 4x6, 5x7, 8x10 portraits and 81/2 x25 panoramas.

I have a couple of Epson printers so I used Epson paper until I bought a box of glossy Kirkland Photo Paper from Costco at a much lower cost per sheet than Epson. The Kirkland paper looks just as good to me as the Epson. Quick dryng, no smudges, heavy weight. Can't say how long the prints will last, though.
