I am thinking of purchasing a 24-70mm f2.8 Lens for my Nikon D-610

I have the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 and love it.

Due to cost of the Nikon. I was thinking about buying the less expensive Tamron Lens.

Appreciate any feedback from those with experience in this area.

Thanks

Ed Heaton is a well known Landscape photographer from near Lancaster, Pa. Ed shoots Nikon and uses Tamron lenses. I know Ed and I value his knowledge and honesty. He told me in March that he loves his Tamron lenses. I have the Nikon lenses and I wouldn't hesitate to use a Tamron lens.

I use this Tamron lens on a Canon 6D. Performance and build quality wise, I am very pleased. It's on my camera 95% of the time. I'm not sure if the resale value after a few years would be as good as a Nikon or Canon brand.

In my opinion the nikon will suit you better then the tamron, and as someone else has menchioned, the value of a nikon vs. a tamron, if you ever decide to trade, would be quite large..

I have the Tamron and while I can't comment v the Nikon, it is on my camera most of the time. Before buying it I did look at DXOmark which suggests that the Tamron is better than the Nikon. You can check for your camera model and see what the DXO result is for it.

Tom,

I used to have the Nikon, had to sell for financial reasons. I now have the Tamron, again for financial reasons.

If money was not the obstacle I would get the Nikon again.

- I find that the AF is not as fast as the Nikon.
- In low to low-ish light it really struggles to find AF
- If the object does not have clear contrast, forget auto focus.
- In the above conditions I find myself using Manual Focus a lot more than I would have done with the Nikon. The VC function helps only a tiny little bit under these conditions.

I honestly cannot remember ever having to shoot manual with the Nikon because of focus issues.

In well lit situations the Tamron is every bit as good as the Nikon, but I still believe the Nikon is the better lens.

Another thing, if you like using filters, you need to buy new ones. With the 70/200 and 24/70 Nikons you can interchange.

This comment is only about the filters. I have 3 Nikon lenses that are 77mm diameter, 1 that is 72mm and 2 that are 52mm. I have a V-ND filter and a CPL that are 77mm and I use step rings so I can swap the filters onto my non77mm lenses. Much less expensive than buying duplicate filters.

I bought my Nikon last fall from a fellow Hogger. It was gently used and had been recently serviced by Nikon. Because of this there was little price difference. I have used a Tamron and notice very little difference in the quality of the images. Honestly, I wouldn't trade and would make the same choice if I had it to do over again.

Just traded in my Sigma 24-70 f 2.8 for the Nikon 24-70 f 2.8 and was amazed at the difference. The nikon model is an amazing lens.

I have the Nikon 24-70 2.8 and love it. I would stay with Nikon. I went with the Nikon 70-200 F4 as it has a better VR system (better than the VRII on the 2.8) just as sharp and lighter

I've shot with both, and as somebody has already mentioned, I found the autofocus to be a bit slower and hunting more on the Tamron. With that said though, if money was a decision point, I'd have no problem going with the Tamron.

I too own the Nikon D-610 and the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8. When I bought my 24-70 I bought the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 Lens. I love it and it is on my camera most of the time.

Here is one of the sites I checked before I bought mine.

http://www.cameraegg.org/best-lenses-for-nikon-d600/

This is another site I checked where the Tamron scored higher.

http://www.dxomark.com/Lenses/Compare/Side-by-side/Tamron-SP-24-70mm-F28-Di-VC-USD-Nikon-on-Nikon-D610-versus-AF-S-Nikkor-24-70mm-f-2.8G-ED-on-Nikon-D610-versus-24-70mm-F2.8-IF-EX-DG-HSM-Nikon-on-Nikon-D610___885_915_175_915_300_915

I have been happy with my purchase.

My shooting buddy has a tarmron the images are very good and sharp but the only problem he has is that in low light his tamrom sometimes hunts, then for a few shots it will works just fine. We have mounted the lens on another body and get the same problem, so make your own mind up. Your right it is expensive! But is Nikon build quality better? Only you can decide that. But buy cheap buy twice. Is the order of the day here.
