Over the years I've read many discussions on monopods but I don't remember anything about one for taller people. Googling it would not be as good advice as from users. I'm 6' 3" and had have deteriorating disc disease. I'm planing on a nice vacation in Sept & I want to be prepared. I'm using a Nikon D200 with an 18-200 DX lens. Thank you for all the advice you will give.

This Gitzo has a maximum height of 6'3" which should put the camera view finder or screen at about 6'5". If you are 6'3", I expect your eyes are about at a 6"0" height.

It holds 40 lbs and is $224.

You can always use a monopod with a ball head attached. Something like this ball head from Calumet.

Is the pistol grip head, for angling, or just rotating?

This is a very good recommendation. I am 6'1" and purchased this monopod from B&H. I have no regrets.

I'm 6'-2" and very happy with this one.
Light but built like a tank.

Listed as 65" ... but once I put the head and the camera it is just right.

Both. Plus, it adds height to you setup. ;)

Or buy a less expensive monopod and add a center column extension. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/Center-Columns-Accessories/ci/402/N/4075788752

"I'm 6' 3" and had have deteriorating disc disease." You too?! Same height only spinal stenosis is my problem. Used an el cheapo monopod last September/October in rough country. Had to bend a little but worked well.

I have used a poor man's monopod where a regular tripod or monopod could not be used. Fasten a 1/4x20 eyebolt to a length of chain equal to your height. When needed, screw the bolt into the tripod socket. Put your foot on the other end of the chain, and lift your camera and lens against the chain to steady your shot. It works amazingly well, so long as you are strong enough to maintain the tension on the chain.
