I would like to get a hand grip for my new Canon 5D Mark lll. I know the best one out there will probably be the branded Canon one, but if anybody has suggestions as to good aftermarket ones I would appreciate their input. I will only be using it occasionally. Thank you.

Are you looking for the Kalt like Nikonian recommended or was it a battery grip?

Hey!! I have a battery grip for the Mark III that I mistakenly bought (I have a Mark II) and will gladly sell it. It is not the official Canon, but from the third market. If that's OK, say so and we'll negotiate via private message.

My mistake. A battery hand grip is what I was asking about. I have an old L hand grip. Thanks for noticing.
I bought a used battery grip for my 5D Mk II and like it lot and just leave it on the camera all of the time. I recently had a problem with the camera and intermittent power problems with it. I eventually figured out the grip was loose... If you put one on your camera be sure it remains tight so you don't develop very aggravating intermittent problems.
I'm a big fan of battery grips on my cameras... I shoot a lot of vertical (portrait) orientation shots, and the grip makes that a lot easier. 5D Mark III in particular has an auxiliary joystick on the grip, to allow AF point selection (among other functions). That's a really nice improvement (that's also available on the battery grip for the 7D Mark II).
I have always stuck with the OEM (i.e., Canon) grips, simply because I've heard and read of enough people having problems with the third party grips that I am reluctant to try them. Some of those may be fine. Others, who knows? The third party certainly are considerably cheaper.
I'm 30+ year professional photographer and I buy the Vivtar copy of the Canon
they work great! Then buy the hand strap.
Try KEH for a used Canon grip, It seems that OEM , there's no problem recognizing the grip with the camera.
I've had 5 of the Vivtar copies and put a hell of lot of milage on my bodies. NEVER had a problem!
