Trip to Duluth

Greetings All,

In mid-June my daughter and I will be visiting Duluth, Minnesota for a couple days. I went there a two years ago with my oldest and had a great time but it was raining like the dickens the day we got in then the next day we were ran out of town by the Grandma Marathoners. I'll let you paint that picture yourself. :-) So much for planning ahead, though. We did have most of a day there and got to see the Aerial Lift Bridge (in use!) and visited the Maritime Musuem. Then we rented a couple of bikes and rode up the coastal trail to Fitger's Brewery for dinner. Unfortunately Spirit Mountain was closed at the time. This year we're missing the marathon by a week so there should be plenty of places to stay. My daughter's been doing some research in the area and I'd like to hit the Railroad Museum. Does anyone have any suggestions for places to go and/or photo ops in the two days we're there? Any fairs or festivals at that time?

Thanks,

Keith

The William A. Irvin Ore Ship is very close to the railroad museum and the lift bridge.
The wife & I were there last summer and I enjoyed both!

Not too far up the coast is the Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls and some really nice hiking trails. Weather should be good by mid June - then again, it's MN and who knows!

You might also want to do the River Walk and some of the local antique shops around town. Since you are a photographer, the old homes near the Lake should provide you plenty of opportunity to use your cameras. I would have suggested the Gun Flint Trail, but for God's sake you are from Alaska and it would only be more of the same for you. Several restaurants have been featured on Dinners, Restaurants, and Dives. Not all of them have been expensive or located near Grandma's. The Radison restaurant downtown has a room at the top that turns as you eat your dinner. Of course there are three casinos close, one located in the downtown area. Should be enough to keep you busy.

The marathon is June 20. Did you check to see if it's a conflict again this time?

The Duluth Rose Garden in Leif Erickson Park is beautiful and a great view of the lift bridge in he distance. I'm not sure of the location but if you google it there is a place high up on the hills of Duluth where you can overlook the whole city and would be a great spot in the evening to take pictures. You can look on (Capture MN. com) to see some of these sights pictures of the area. Enjoy your trip.

Enger Tower on top of the hill offers the best panorama shots of the lake and St. Louis River bay with the port and the ore docks. Take the skyline drive from West Duluth all the way east picking up 7 bridges road.

A half hour up the shore is Two Harbors. Stop at the city campground there for some great lake shots. It is on the way to Split Rock light.

Have fun!

Great suggestions, thanks. A lot to cram in to two days but we'll make the best of it!

I grew up in Duluth, and I have many fond memories of the area. The suggestions that other members have made are pretty complete except for the Skyline Drive and the Seven Bridges Road. Plenty of Photo Ops...Also, the July 4th fireworks over the bay are spectacular.
