I started with a Nikon D80, upgraded to a D300s and then a D7100. As I was buying lenses, I planned ahead and started to buy FX lenses, which work great on the DX Cameras.

Last year, I purchased a D750 (my first FX camera), and I already had FX lenses to use with it. I have kept the D7100 as my backup camera. (The D80 and D300s have been sold.)

As for using a DX lens on an FX camera. The D750 will automatically switch to a DX mode (10 MP vs the full frame 24 MP). When I tried to use the DX lens in FX mode, the vignetting was awful and the image was not usable.

FYI -- with photos taken in good light (aka ISO 1600 or less), it is hard to tell which came from the D7100 and which came from the D750. Both cameras put out great images. And after post processing in Lightroom/Photoshop, I am happy with either camera. But it feels more fun to have an FX camera, more for bragging rights than image quality. (Low light, aka ISO above 2500, the D750 has an small advantage.)

Can I use an FX Lens on my DX Camera....ie my D7100, and will it cause any problem or change?

Yes. I do it all the time. I have a D7100 and a D610. The lens I really like is the 24-70 mm f2.8, and I use it on both cameras. The D7100 is great for telephoto lenses. If you can I would keep your d7100 when you get your D810. I love my D610 and I am sure you will love the D810.

Photostephen and drosegarden;
You guys have given me the exact answer I needed regarding FX Lens use on DX cameras. I intend to keep my D7100 and purchase the 24-70 from B&H today. My wife and I will be leaving PA next Monday to go to our vacation home in Florida for a few weeks and I will most likely purchase the D810 then and have it shipped to our Florida address.
Thank you for your valuable input.
Frank

Yes, I did it for years. I had a lot of Nikon lenses that were meant for FX cameras that I used on my D300. The biggest problem was with the magnification factor (1.5) so my wide angle lenses were not as wide as they would have been on a FX camera. There is also an minor issue with the corners being a little "soft" due to the magnification but I don't think it was that big of a deal. I enlarged many of my picutures to 16x24 and they looked really good.

I did eventually move up to the D610 so all my lenses work now. I only owned one DX lens and I sold it with the D300.

I want to upgrade my D7100 to a D810. I have quite a few DX lenses and would like to use them on the D810. I would have bought it today until I read a B & H Q&A which gave this Best Answer: "Your expensive full frame camera will default to the DX area of the sensor. Nothing wrong with that, but unless you plan on upgrading your lenses it is a big waste of money. I think you can tell it to use the full FX area, but your lens will likely vignette like crazy and you will not be happy with the results. The D810 is well known (as are all 36+ Mpix cameras for demanding top quality glass to achieve the best results. You need to consider why you are going to FF and make sure you can afford enough on FF lenses to make the transition sensible."
The D810 description calls it an FX or DX Camera and I am a little let down by the answer. I agree that Full Frame is the way to get Fantastic pix. I had hoped the answer would state that on a comparison with my D7100 the G810 pix would be significantly better.
Do any of you D810 users agree 100% with the B H Answer?

The first thing that enters my mind is the question...What business is B&H in? From their point of view, they are correct. I have both the D7100 and the D810. I have been in your position...made the plunge. Best decision I've made. For the kind of photos you take...24-70 fits the bill. My favorite for portraits is the 105/f2 DC Nikkor. Good shooting.

All have valid points having moved from DX to FX myself.
I got the Nikon 28-300mm FX Lens first then moved to the D600 FX Camera then up to he D800E.

Quick question....
I may purchase FX lenses to use on my D7100 until I learn a bit more about the D810.
Which all-around FX lens would be a good starter for me?
I don't take many Micro pix, very few telephoto and not many landscapes.
I take informal portraits and just simply everyday photos of things that are of interest to me. I am not a professional photographer and I would like a very good camera with good lenses. The D810 s my choice.

Nikon 50mm 1.8 (prime) or Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 (zoom). I love my 28-300 on my D7100 but it may show it's flaws on the D810.

I recently purchased the 28-300 for my D750. It is on my camera 90% of the time now. Image Quality is great. I also have the "kit" 24-120 f/4 lens which I purchased with the D750.

But I like the range flexibility with the 28-300. I would have to do a deep pixel peak to see a difference between the 24-120 and the 28-300 when shooting above f/5.6.

A retired pro photographer told me he sold his 24-7- f/2.8 and kept his 28-300 and 24-120. And he now shoots with a D810. He is happy with the quality of these FX lenses.

I really value your advice....I learned a bit about FX and DX lenses and camera sensors. I thought I would have to buy all new lenses when I realized (through discussion with you guys)that I already own three FX lenses and one with FX in DX Crop Mode.
I have the AF-S 70-300, AF-S 105 2.8G, AF 60 2.8d as FX and the 18-140G as FX in DX Crop Mode.
It is interesting (for me) to note that all of my other lenses specify "Nikon DX" on the lens barrel. These, most obviously are NOT FX lenses. Some were carryovers from my old D70s and D90 Bundle days. I guess I should sell them.
Every day holds a new learning experience and thanks to you guys and gals, mine has been beneficial....and profitable.
Thanks again to all.

I made the change last year. After I bought the D810 I sold all of my DX lenses and upgraded. I have not regretted the move one bit.
