IF you crop to 5x7 proportions you can print 11x14, crop to 8x10 and print 16x20, 5x7 and 8x10 are the traditional sizes at least back when I was in PhotoRetail, if it was not those proportions it was hard/ impossible to get stock frames and mats.

all good stuff, thanks. Might I ask will there be any diff me using my full frame vs crop when I shoot the photo.? should I then also shoot wider assuming I will need to crop and loose part of my photo when I print it ??

Just be aware of the area you intend to print, with a removable pentaprism we marked the focusing screen, and the screen on the 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 , now just have to estimate based on the focus points in the viewfinder.

Both full frame and APS-C sensor are 3:2 aspect ratio so there is no difference. 4/3 or M4/2 are 4:3 and requires less crop to fit 11x14.

I am laughing as I type this because I can't believe what I am learning. I travel to the art store and find matting pre cut at 16x20 with a photo size of 11x14. A size I consider very standard seeing as they are sold all the time. I find out now, that my Canon Pixma Pro-100 can't print 11x14 ?? what am I missing. ? I've called Canon twice and they don't seem to see the issue of art stores selling 11x14 matts for printers that can't print the same size. I have Picasa, Canon Photo print and Adobe Elements and none of them can adjust to print the size I wish to. I can pick the paper size (I have 13x19). The best I can prints is 11x17 and that cuts off several inches of my photos. Can anyone help me. ??? thanks

Qimage will let you print custom sizes, and if not, you can print any size image on 13x19 - you'll just have more white border.

My camera -- and most others -- have a 3:2 ratio. Thus the closest to 8x10 is 8x12. The closest to 11x14 would be 11x16.5. You could do 12x18 and crop from all sides. Or just use your mat to hide portions of the picture: Just move it around. An earlier UHH forum put me onto FastStone Photo Resizer. With it you can change the aspect ratio and print whatever size you want. I needed a series of 5x7 prints. the closest using the aspect ratio 2:3 would be 5x7.5 and I'd have to lose side detail. FastStone squeezed the picture slightly so that I had a true 5x7. FastStone would squeeze the sides in and stretch vertically to get the true 11x14. Just Google FastStone and download and install. I think it's free or is a minimal cost.

This is strange. My 13x19 printer has a custom size and i can make the print any size I want up to 14x14, I think that's what they told me. I know I can print any size I want up to 13x19, done a bunch of them. I also have a iP100 8 1/2" printer. Not as versatile as my 13x19 but I can crop in picasa and print it on the printer then just crop the paper with a paper cutter! Or if you just have to have an 8x10 photo and don't want to cut the paper, buy 8x10 paper! Printing your own photo's especially on a 13" printer throw's all the rules out the window. Someone mentioned that an 11x14 mat works well with 8 1/2x11 paper. Easy, print the photo on 812x11 paper, problem solved. A print size I do now and then is 6x8, no problem. Crop the photo in Picasa to 6x8 and run it through my 13 printer with a custom 6x8 setting.

In your print dialogue, is there a tick box to lock original aspect ratio? If ticked this would lock your print ratio to 2x3 ratio. Just a thought before the morning coffee.

Step 1. Crop ( this is really setting ratio to) 11/14.
Step 2. Resize the image to 11/14 and set pixels to 300 pixels per inch. If it is already above 300 points don't resize or resample.
Step 3. Print. Canons will not print borderless except in standard sizes. 4/6, 5/7, 13/19 But then you are not trying to this. Just use 13/19 paper and center it. Click preview before printing so you can see how it will come out. Set a border all the way around in the printer controls. One inch top and bottom and 2.5 on the sides. Tell the printer control you are using 13/19 paper. If you are using 11/14 paper Pixmas will not print borderless so it will come out with a border.

I also recommend turning off printer color control so your editing software controls the color. Otherwise who knows how it will come out. Set printer control to none

using Elements I tried to resize to 11.25x114.25 thinking the .25 would be enough to tape on the back of the matt. I changed the pixels to 240 as suggested. I put in the paper that I have 19x13 and pressed print. it printed 11x17 and now I have to cut off part of my photo and that it what I was trying to get away from. new question, when re-cropping, how do I know what the finished size will be ??

Nice photo! Great impact. In my opinion, TheDMan's crop reduces the impact of the photo. My advice to you is not to cheap out and crop it in order to use a standard sized mat. Pay the price and get a custom cut mat and do your work justice. I promise you, if you crop that shot, you will regret it every time you look at that picture!

I agree that the crop doesn't help the image. If it were me, I'd print it at 12x18 and be done with it.

I wouldn't worry about a border. I have two paper cutter's and a utility knife and a great straight edge.

Agree, and an 18x24 mat with an 11-3/4 x 17-3/4 opening gives 1/8-inch overlap onto the print for mounting. That will give you an even 3-1/8-inch mat border around the print and fit nicely into a standard 18 x 24 frame. That is one of my standards for matting and framing.
