IPhoto problem

I just opened Photo for the first time and it asks me if I want to use the photos in Aperture or iPhoto. I use Lightroom and I know that all relocations of stored pictures need to be done through LR or it won't recognize them. I am reluctant to follow the directions in Photo because I suspect that it will disrupt the path that is stored in Lightroom. Any guidance here?

Bob

Go back and do the update to 10.10.3 and the 10.10.3 Supplemental. Then click on Photos and don't mess with iPhoto. You should get a message that Photos wants to upgrade your Library and check ok.

Hold on before you do this... I recommend you tell Photos you want to start a new library, and not update your LR library/catalog. Then only put in the Photos library the shots you want to use Photos for. In my case these are the "snapshots from parties" types of shots that I want to share quickly.

If you allow Photos to update your main library from LR, you don't (at least I do not) know what it will do to the files the next time you open LR. At the very least it will try to start sharing your images with your cloud account, and across all your machines and phone etc. That works for a few hundred snapshots, but not a large high quality library.

I was not talking about updating LR's library. I was talking about updating iPhoto's Library. It asked me that when I first opened up Photos. And everything is ok

I have been, happily, using iPhoto for years right up to, and including, Yosemite 10.10.3. The other day, without my request, everything switched over to Photos. I looked at Photos and found it restricted my ability to make corrections. Fortunately, I have "Apple Care". It took me 1 1/2 hours with a tech to reverse the process. If they would put the same sliders from iPhoto back into Photos, I would switch. Apple is "supposed" to be for creative users. They have taken a step backward (in my opinion) with this one.

The app is just called "photos. The Icon is circular with colored leaves. Once loaded, the format is different from iphoto but essentially the same once you fool around with it. Good Luck.

You should still have iPhoto and all its tools in both Launchpad and Applications folder. Take a look.

I recently upgraded my mac to osx yosemite and now I cannot open iphoto. I get the following message. "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latestversion. The version of iphoto installed on this mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the mac app store". I cannot find this app so I am at a loss as what to do. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

OK, here is how to find your iPhoto icon. Start with an empty desktop. Click on "launchpad". You will now see a new "desktop" type set-up showing all icons on your system, including iPhoto. If that icon is not found, turn the page by scrolling your mouse to move to the right. Keep going until you get to the page with the iPhoto icon. Double click the iPhoto icon and off you go. Good luck!

Having use the New Photo app that came with the Yosemite update, and having nearly 35k of images, I find myself in the position of saying, I really don't miss using iphoto. The Photo app is simple to use and way faster that iphoto.
I've be using it for a little over a month. As for more specialized editing, you can still use LR or Aperture. They can coexist on the same mac. iphoto is still there also if you can get it working. So, you can pick your poison. They are still better that what I find on the other end of the world.

I thought it had been deleted with the Yosemite (pronounced yo-sa-mite :)
update but then I looked and it's still in Applications and it still opens.

So Apple software engineers deleted it from the Doc but they didn't delete the program itself.

That's a clue, a strong hint from the software engineers at Apple. Use Photos from now on. If you don't like Photos, then try some of the other popular photo programs and use one of them.

Weird, I've updated my OSX to the latest, and found PHoto installed with the new OSX. As for the iphoto app, it is still there, just that I had to find in in the application section. It still works, but I'm using LR5, and it doesn't affect my editing. Also, there is Picasa for the Mac, it does editing also.

It is there must it tells me I have to update to the newest version. In applications and launchpad, it will not open. Odd that it works for some and does not work for others (including me).
