IPhoto problem

I recently upgraded my mac to osx yosemite and now I cannot open iphoto. I get the following message. "In order to open iPhoto, you need to update to the latestversion. The version of iphoto installed on this mac is not compatible with OS X Yosemite. Download the latest version for free from the mac app store". I cannot find this app so I am at a loss as what to do. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, what did you do to fix it?

iPhoto is not included in Yosemite - look for the Photo app that was bundled with the OS software instead. Not having switched to Yosemite, I can only report what I've read, that Photos will import the iPhoto library automatically.

Lucky has it right and the same happened to me. Yosemite does not do iPhoto. The upgrade moves you to Photos. When you open Photos you have a choice of using your iPhoto library or creating a new one. I was disappointed in Photos. It tries to do everything for you and so you loose some control. Maybe I will try it for books. I do not know if the same has happened to Aperture.

I upgraded to Yosemite and everything worked fine, just as it was before. I had no problems with iPhoto. Try looking in the Applications folder for iPhoto, and check there for upgrades.

Iphoto is in applications but has a grey line running through it. When I try to open it tells me I need to update? I did get "photos" with Yosmite and figured it had to do something with iphoto.

Are you using Yosemite 10.10.3 ? That might be the update you're being requested to do.

I have iPhoto in both Launchpad and Applications, no gray lines, accessible.

I just did my update yesterday and IPhoto was replaced with Photos. I believe that you will need to download Photos now and then you can follow the prompt to transfer your IPhoto libraries. I did not have to download Photos as it was done automatically - I wonder why yours wasn't?

Wow. I wish I could help you Dusty. When Apple introduced the latest version of Yosemite--10.10.3--they removed both iPhotos and Aperture from the App Store. The only things I can think of to do would be to go to the App Store and look under "Updates" and if nothing there look under "Purchases" If that doesn't help then contact Apple Support and/or make an appointment for the Genius Bar at an Apple Store.
I hope you can get this worked out. Let us know how it goes.

I am using 10.10.3. The IPhoto icon does appear in launchpad with not grey line through it but it will not open. Tells me I need to update. I guess they are referring to the new "Photos" that comes with Yosemite.

With 10.10.3 you should already have Photos. Check the dock at bottom of the screen. It's a multi-colored kaleidoscope icon. If by all means install Photo from the app store.

I just checked my updates because something came to mind. There were two 10.10.3 updates; my dates show one on April 9 2015 & the other on April 15 2015, Photos was in the first one.
