Ooops, missed the micro in your description. I'll blame it on the small print on my smartphone... LOL. That said, most of my post remains the same. The lens itself only goes to half life size. It can be programmed into the D800's menu & being an AI mount, is safe to mount. You will get metering with older manual focus lenses in either manual or aperture preferred modes only. I shoot my manual focus lenses mostly in manual with a ring light for additional illumination. One thing about the longer focal lengths is that they become harder to shoot hand held due to their size & weight...

I am very interested in macro photography. I have been watching for a macro lens on e-bay and I am many Nikon Micro Nikkor Al 55mm F3.5 manual lenses at attractive prices. I shoot a D7000. Does anyone have any experience with this lens? They are advertised with a ring that produces 1:1 images. Thank you for any comments or suggestions.
I have owned this same lens, since 1975, without the 1:1 extension ring. It is very sharp! It was my only normal lens and macro lens until I bought the later f/2.8 AI version of it. I've not used it on a digital camera, but made thousands of slides with it. I used it most often on a copy stand.
I started out with a Nikon F in the 1970's and had the 55mm micro nikkor as my main lens. It was not Ai so when I went Nikon digital later in life, I got an Ai one on ebay. Can't see not having it in my lens collection.
