Is not the lens quality the limiting factor? Does 52-Mp technology somehow make up for that? Or is this hype to fool amateur camera photographers? Scratching my head.

Have to agree. Pixel count can get redundant if the other components can't match pace. Tiny lenses can only do so much.

Maybe Canon and Nikon are going to release DSLRs w/ built in phones !

Even if they do stuff 52 mega pixels into a phone the sensor is only so big so the pixels have to be very small. The lenses used in camera phones are fixed. There is no way they can let in the amount of light of a interchangeable lens.

The "phone" will have multiple lens' and sensors, so the pixels may not have to be much smaller, then stitch them together.
That's how I read it anyhow.
This might get interesting, but I'm keeping my dslr.

The multiple lenses sound a bit like "simultaneous" focus stacking. Could work for DOF considerations, but otherwise...

The telescope comparison is interesting but again would really make more sense to a "real" camera, say a multi-lens PNS type digial, reducing noise and increasing DOF, but imagine "tuning" or aligning such a tiny system.
