There are some shirts that have been manufactured to be worn in hot sunny areas that actually do block harmful rays. Check out REI catalog:

This shirt has UPF 50+ protection. I have several of these 'photo' or 'travel' shirts and they are comfortable even in the summer heat and humidity of the Midwest.

Yes, I've seen quite a few choices for sunblock clothing. I use the washing machine and the SunGard treatment.

Wear a wide brim hat.

Also, is you see a scaly dry patch of skin on face or ears it may be actinic keratosis which is a precancerous change of the skin. Treatment is easy with liquid nitrogen freezing. Area will then blister slightly, scab over, and eventually new skin will form under the scab before it falls off. Result is avoidance of skin cancer.

Also watch out for those 'moles'. Malignant Melanoma is nasty and very hard to treat.

I've had it all: melanoma, basal cell, squamous - at least three of each. I also get a shot of liquid nitrogen almost every time I go for a checkup. This dates back to 1979, when I had surgery and a skin graft. I haven't been able to buy life insurance since then.

We often learn too late. Working in the engine rooms of ships and tugs many years ago I never wore hearing protection. Nobody did back then. "Huh?" has become a constant part of my vocabulary. I started wearing sunglasses in 1970. I never go without them. My sight is excellent. A friend, younger then me, a farmer, has never worn them. He is almost blind now. I've had plenty of exposure to the sun but only very minor skin problems. Still, I get checked twice a year. An old friend spent his life in construction. Never got checked. Melanoma took him five yrs ago. As much as I dislike going to the doctor, the older you get the more you have to keep an eye on things. I abused myself when I was younger. Just visited a surgeon yesterday to schedule spinal surgery for next month. Not looking forward to it. Never had an operation before. I wish I had more sense when I was younger.

Jerry sunscreens cause cancer to, and a lot of sunscreen products do not help protect you.

We often learn too late. Working in the engine roo... (show quote)

I worked in the engine room of the M/V Mount Washington in NH for a couple of years and often ear plugs with ear muffs. It used two huge Enterprise diesels from WW II. Some of the old, former engineers would come down to visit, and they were practically deaf.

BboH, you can take vitamin D supplements, but malignent melanomia and even invasive basel cell cancer can be deadly.

William1234, there is potential harm in almost anything, but there has been no reputable study that indicates that the FDA-approved chemicals used in commercially available sunscreens cause cancer. And, even if they did, the numbers are much lower than the number if deaths each year from melanomia. Listen to Jerry. He is one of our less-cranky fellow Hedgehogs and his advice is always sound. In this instance, it could literally save your life.

When you're shooting outside, be aware that exposure to the sun, even on a cloudy day, can eventually lead to various types of skin cancer. Unlike a sunburn, it's not going to happen immediately, but can show up years later. Using a good sunscreen can help to prevent that, but clothing alone will not. The sun goes right through clothing. You can buy shirts, hats, and pants that block out the harmful rays of the sun, and you can treat regular clothing with RIT Sun Guard, which is what I do.

What the hell is summer? There is still snow on the ground.

You remember summer. It's that ten day period in the middle of August, just before the leaves start to fall. :D

Jerryc41, I did not mean to "damn with faint praise." Your posts always seem to be to the point and offer good advice. I do not remember an instance when you have been snarky as some Hedgehogs often are. I am perfectly happy to change my description to the more direct "he is not cranky."

Sorry, no sunscreen for me, if I use any of that stuff, I get wired burns almost immediately, without I'm fine.
