I'd suggest you rent the 16-85 and see if it makes a big enough difference that you'd make the purchase.

when I get the money, I've been thinking about that 18-140 awful hard. I have the 18-105 and love it, have the 55-300 and a 70-300 and an old 70-210, they all work great. My thinking is a lot of photo ops come in needing something between 55 or 60mm and 140 mm. Kind of a no mans land. To get 135 from an 18-105, you need to get closer, it isn't happening. That way with an 18-140 and a decent 70-300, your base's are covered. Just gave a niece my old D70 and my old 28-200 Sigma. For a walk around lens and carrying no extra lens, that thing was super, very light weight.

With today's 24MP sensors and excellent VR you can be more flexible on the high end with your lenses because you can make very high quality crops. Cropping in half is like doubling your lens mm...and gives a 12MB image...the best achievable not very many years ago.

Everyone has their own point of view on what lens to take--I would go with either the 18-105 or the 18-200. I have both and prefer the 18-105--and the difference between them as far as being able to shoot something at a distance is not that much.

I agree. the 18-200 is best and if having slightly less weight is imperative, then the 18-105 would be a fair alternative. It's good to have some reach and the ability to pull in any interesting distant objects or scenes. IMHO.

I used the 18-200 as a walk around lens for one trip. It was OK, but a little too much keystone distortion of buildings. I really like the Sigma 17-50 2.8 as a walk around, and I did find that I don't really use the extended reach of the 18-200 too much, anyway.

I would take the 18-200 because it covers so many situations. If however you want to carry less weight, I suggest the 18-105 VR. It's a very sharp lens and it covers a lot more than the 18-55. I would also take the 35mm for low light situations.

If you want to buy something, get a good compact camera for the times when you don't want to take the DSLR.
