Actually, it probably is "holographic" if it is good., Ref -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_weapon_sight

It's not a laser. It uses a zero-power meniscus lens to superimpose an image of an LED-illuminated reticle in the scene seen through it. Because of the design, it doesn't matter where behind the window your eye is placed, the reticle image stays superimposed over the same part of the scene.

Here's a webpage explaining how a similar (but rather upscale) decice intended for pointing telescopes works.

Listen to rockride's advice and comments. If you are all going to run out and buy some el cheapo red dot, you better read up on parallax.

With the range of distance us photographers usually shoot at, especially shooting BIF, you will want a parallax free sight.

This means that for any distance, regardless of where your head is located, or regardless of where in the sight's view finder you see the dot, it will be accurate and on target. You could imagine that for firearm accuracy, you can't really be "off" a few inches, let alone a few feet with inferior red dots. So be careful in your selection of that $20-$50 red dot. You'll probably end up throwing it away and not know why it didn't work for you.

And remember, don't focus on the dot, focus on the subject with both eyes open. The brain will manage the image, superimposing the dot on the subject and eliminating the outline of the sight itself.

Also, you have to practice and train with the red dot sight. Most firearm users who buy red dots do not have good initial results. No kidding, because you didn't train and practice. Pick up a musical instrument....you'll stink. But with practice... Within a few months, red dots can be mastered.

It is called a Red/Green Dot Reflex sight. A light is reflected off of the front (The high place) and you can see it. Shows you where your Gun/Camera is pointing. Very effective. Can be used with both eyes open. Once aligned, just keep the dot centered on your target, and you will be in frame. Instructions usually come with the sight.Very good for panning a shot off of a tripod, or mono.
