Canon CR2 vs CR2 in Photoshop

Well, I've been using PS 12 for a year now and like it. BUT, my son just sent me a camera raw from his new 7D mark II and I can not open. Does that mean PS does not upgrade for camera formats UNLESS I buy an upgrade or jump to CC?

Is there a way to just get the camera format changes without other enhancements?

Thanks,
RegisG

PS 12? Do you mean Photoshop Elements 12 maybe?

If it does not support your camera, then yes you would need to upgrade to Photoshop Elements 13, or join the subscription and get Photoshop CC.

Your other option would be to download the free Adobe DNG converter. As long as it supports the camera it will convert the raw files into a DNG file that PSE 12 can read and manipulate.

When new cameras are released it usually takes at least a few months for Adobe to provide support for them regardless of which Adobe product you use. For instance, the 70D was not supported in Lightroom until the 5.7 version update, I believe. Photoshop (not Elements) will get an update to a new version of Camera Raw. A new version of Photoshop Elements is released each fall. I'm not sure if there are interim updates to fix bugs and provide support for new cameras, but there may be. Others can assist with that. Elements 13 does support the 70D but don't rush out and get it before others chime in.

You can also visit the Canon USA website, find the EOS 7DII and download the related software Digital Photo Professional v 4.1x. This software free from Canon will open your son's CR2 on your computer.

You may be required to supply the camera's serial number to download DPP.

I did download DPP and it works. It does not replace the post processing capability of PS elements but, I cold at least view the photo.

Now, the question is; do I want to pay endless PS Elements upgrades as every new camera that come out, or not?

Thanks,
