Sorry, Dude, but the burden's on you. Where's your empirical evidence that cotton swabs are the best way to go?

I have no evidence. But if anyone else does, I'm all ears and eyes! Anybody have factual evidence that cotton swabs scratch the coatings on lenses? Printed on the box of Q-tips is a picture and description of their usefulness for cleaning electronics.

Whassa deal here? You asked for opinions, then rebut every suggestion? Your mind's apparently made up, so just keep on doing what youre doing. Good luck with that but why did you bother to ask?

So if cotton swabs are abrasive, then logically cotton Tshirts are also abrasive. Yeah, I should follow that suggestion to use steel (iron) wool. I'm not interested in scratching anything, unless it itches.

For dust you want to use a microfiber cloth or blower. If there's stuff that won't come off that way use a lens tissue with a couple of drops of a lens cleaner solution on the tissue. Never put the cleaner solution directly on the lens glass. Wipe in the circular pattern.

I use a blower on a regularly. Some where alone the line I picked up the microfiber idea. You can get optical kits that have lens cleaning fluid if really needed and very small clothes. The clothes can be washed periodically in pure water no soap for residue. The wear glasses so first use are lenses and then glasses. The kits or clothes can be picked up at any optical center Sear Optical. I got the idea from a Doctor. I also use an micro fiber cloth as a toper in my bag.

[quote=Earworms]Your thoughts or opinions on using Q-tips to clean lenses.

Cotton swabs have been used effectively for cleaning lenses for decades, and are recommended extensively by companies catering to photographers like B&H. Cotton is a soft plant fiber, and lightly applied to a glass surface, I don't see how it is less safe than other materials including microfiber.

Thank you.

They might be okay for the body, but not the lens. Zeiss Lens Wipes are good.

Delicately Clean Eye Glass Lenses
Q-tips ® cotton swabs are soft enough to clean makeup from the little ridges on eye glasses. Removes the makeup and doesn't scratch the lens!

But I use microfiber towels.

I mean really. You got all the opinions that you asked for and no one on the site agrees with you. If it's a budget thing that you can't afford $2.98 for some Ziess cloths at Walmart then I guess you will have to stick with cotton swabs. Personally I would put anything that causes that much lint anywhere near my cameras, believe me it will find its way into your camera. Like someone said if you don,t want professional advise from professional photographers why waist your time. If like to argue you may want to ask optical department if professional lens cleaning cloths are good for removing ear wax. Good luck anyway. I hate to sound rude bis a started this response..Really!!
