Keynote is Apple's answer to PowerPoint. Slicker in many respects, it does great slide shows, as do iPhoto and iMovie. Its real strength is live visual support for speakers (presenters). Steve Jobs used it for his keynote speeches, as does Tim Cook.

But if you're used to ProShow Gold, or similar software on Windows, why change? Just install Windows on the Mac and get the best of both worlds. That's especially helpful if you have other Windows software you want to continue to use.

If you do want Mac apps, then Fotomagico 4.x is $99.99 on the App Store and is the way to go. It's a five-star rated program that will do a fine job.

I run both platforms on my Mac, and have since 1998 in one way or another. Since Apple went to Intel chips, it works phenomenally well. All you need is enough RAM and drive space.

In reality, you can combine elements of many different programs into an HD video, and get the best of each rolled into one. I used to export video from PowerPoint to add graphics to training shows. Combine it with stills and camera video, and you can do most anything.

I have used Keynote for a 22 minute slideshow with a lot of different transitions and background music. I'm not that snappy on the computer so it took me quite a while to do it but it turned out great. I would lead you to it but I can't figure out how to do that. Sorry!

It's in the Applications folder if pre-installed.

It's downloadable from the App Store if not... Go to the Apple Menu -> App Store...

I appreciate all the input! Now I'll have to experiment with what I have before looking into additional programs. I didn't realize iphoto offered this as I'm used to just jumping into Photoshop to work on my images.

I'm looking for software to create slide shows on a Mac computer. I used to use ProShow Gold on PC but not familiar with Mac programs.
Also, I'm using an OS X Yosemite which I bought refurbished and doesn't have a CD/DVD so guessing I'll have to buy a CD/DVD burner to use with it??? One thing I hate about Macs is lack of information/details about the computer. For example there is a switch at the top of the cylinder indicating lock/unlock which I have NO idea what it is for???
Any help would be much appreciated.
I'm looking for software to create slide shows on ... (show quote)

Go to system preferences (apple logo) top left of your screen, select display or screen saver, choose your source from the options that appear, choose the style of show you want, (ken burns-classic etc:) go from there, you'll soon get the hang of it. It works awesome, if you wish you can also connect to your big tv & use that as a screen too.

Alternately, go to iphoto, select your album or photo's you wish to show, hit the slideshow button at the bottom of your screen, select your style, with or without music from your itunes library and bingo, you're away.

Do not expect apple software to work like windows-- It will be easier for you to start with an open mind---

IIMovie , Keynote, or either of the present photo programs will give you a trouble free slideshow with music and much more (transitions, etc.) and yes, you will need to buy the Apple DVD burner-- remember Apple talks to Apple best.

My MacBook Pro has Keynote, imovie and iphoto. Will either of those create a DVD slide show to be played on DVD player? The Mac has a DVD burner.

I make my slideshows in imovie and go up to the top to 'share' and hit 'export' or 'idvd.' You can burn the slideshow from idvd. If you hit export, you can save the slideshow straight to your hard drive and pick it up from there when you open up idvd also. imovie is a powerful little program with lots of features and does a great job for the cost. Be glad to PM you a link to my dropbox for you to have a look at what you can do with it...and I'm definitely no expert.
