I was going to go to Vegas a couple of years ago, but it didn't work out. I asked for suggestions here, and this is what I accumulated.

Free in Las In Vegas

The circus at Circus Circus - photography allowed, no charge(?).

Hawaiian Marketplace

M&M's World

Flamingo Hotel Wildlife - Flamingos

Golden Nugget Casino
Hand of Faith - largest gold nugget

Caesar’s Palace
Water show on the hour

Mirage Hotel
Volcano 7:00 or 8:00, on the hour

Sam’s Town
Sunset Stampede Laser Light Show is an experience you won’t soon forget! Shows at 2 pm, 4 pm, 6 pm, 8 pm and 10 pm daily.

Gold and Silver Pawn Shop
http://gspawn.com/directions/
Rte 592 W to LV Expwy
Exit 41B, W. Charleston Blvd (Rte 159)
Left on South L V Blvd
It’s on the right, just before Garces Ave.

Take a trip up the Eiffel Tower and you can see and photograph the whole Strip.

As for shows to see I thoroughly enjoyed and laughed until it hurt the Blue Man Group. Also any Cirque du Soleil how will bewilder you. http://www.cirquedusoleil.com/en/destinations/las-vegas/home.aspx I believe "O" and "Zumanity" sell out most often.

I second "old Vegas", i.e., the north end.

Also consider the top of the Stratosphere. Amazing views in 360 degrees should present some great photo ops day or night.

While at Red Rock Canyon be sure to try out the buffet at the restaurant. It is fantastic. Also when taking pictures of the canyon try not to wear eye glasses that have a polarizer in them it will throw off the real color scheme. Such as transition lens.

Henderson is on the river and has river taxis. Good photo ops. They have lots of classic cars too.
After Henderson, you can continue on to Oatman, AZ. The photo ops here are endless and your wife will be entertained too. Oatman is an old Western town with wooden sidewalks. At some point in the day wild donkeys wander in looking for carrots. Many of the shops in Oatman sell carrots. It is easy to spend an entire day here with a camera. The trip to Oatman is worth some scenic shots too.

I love all the photo ops in Vegas but when I go I find at least one day for a road trip to one of three places.
Death Valley 2- 1/2 hour drive
Zion National Park 2- 1/2 hour drive (FANTASTIC)
Mt. Charleston area 45 minutes north

Have you been to Mt. Charleston? I95 30 or 40 minutes to 156 or 157, up to mountain and around. Some nice views and shots of the valley, etc.

Been in Vegas last two months doing some photo work. While I can't trump Jerry's comprehensive list, here are some other thoughts:

A must see stop that has old buildings and even older folks talking about Southern NV history. These guides may have additional sites to recommend.

At night, try the new Fremont experience. Lots of beautiful lights to shoot. And check out the many examples of classic neon signs along Fremont street. During the day, the area is rather blah, but come night magic happens and it becomes a photographers paradise.

Go north towards Reno. Tons of old towns on the way (Including where the F117 was developed, Tonopah), hot springs on the way as well, Naval warfare base, then Carson City (The capitol) is rich in history including Mark Twain's home. Virginia city and the center of the silver mines. Finally highway 50 going east takes you along the Pony express route, the tree with a million shoes hanging from it and many beautiful mining towns in each range of mountains you cross. Then turn south on 93 to Wells (more mining) to Cotote Springs golf course and then back to Vegas. Going north you will be in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas.
Or go towards Pahrump also for some interesting scenery nearby. In Vegas there is the big ferris wheel now.
Not sure of your time but if a road trip vacation is it this can be done in a week (Trust me if you stop and look at all there is you would not make it past Carson City. Next Trip for you I will give more about the Reno area.

The Shoe Tree is no more. It was cut down by vandals about three years ago. It was kinda cool.

If you like shooting birds, they have a great place to go for ducks, grebes, shore birds and lots of smaller birds also. It is down on south Boulder Highway as a recall and it is really a water treatment facility. They have great volunteers there ready to help with questions, etc.

Rhyolite, Nevada--ghost town near Beatty on highway 374. This is in area near part of Death Valley. The ghost town has old buildings left from the mining period.

During the auto race around the world in the early days of auto travel which was won by the Pierce Arrow car, the contestants traveled through this mining town.

Unlike some ghost towns access is easy from the paved road.

So sad. I have not been on that route for about 7 years.
I will need to find my photo of that tree and post it.
