May I ask a computer purchase question here? (for the general non-photography discussion)

Would a 2008 used Mac laptop from a swapmeet be able or need to install the new Yosemite Operating System? Is "$300+" price reasonable? Are there any other considerations? or caveats?

Hoping for quick replies before going to the swapmeet tomorrow.

I avoid Apple products myself.
But I have the wife's hand-me-down IPad and it is Islanded by Apple. There are things I would love to do with it, but I run into a wall. Or shall we say an Apple Tree?
The OS cannot be updated above where it is (5.??).
Some of the things I'd like to put on it require 6.0 or higher.

So you may get a pig in a poke, Mary. Get an over priced relic you can't really use.

I don't really like a ball head with a heavy lens like the Tamron 150-600. Too much chance it tilts rapidly if the ball is too lose.

I use the Gimbal mount and it is so nice on that kind of mount. And when I need to go to handheld, I lock the Gimbal mount and it becomes my elbow rest while holding the lens.

Thanks so much for all the references. I'll try to use them tomorrow at the swapmeet.

I'm glad to have warmed your funny bone. ;)

But you have to admit, THIS does not look like what most folks would conjure up for their tripod.

I think I am the Odd Ball in the zoo. ;)

BTW, I do love your "Glass Half Full" Avatar.

Nothing wrong with creative approaches to problems, nor with being the odd ball. Nothing would get invented or improved if we did not have people to do those things. Thanks for the link.

I'm glad you like that avatar. Thank you. Drinking half a pint of beer through a straw can be challenging enough, but getting the bottom half and snapping the picture before gravity took over involved several failed attempts!

cheers

I am using a very strong and stable Induro AT313 tripod, weighs 5 lbs and something

I am also using the Induro BHL-3 ball head, and have been exceedingly pleased with how tightly it locks down the Big Tammy on my D7100.

This article helped me immensely in choosing a ballhead:

Read this:

http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/Be-a-Gear-Expert/Choosing-a-Tripod/

Buy a proper tripod to support your 600mm (900mm if you are using it on a cropped sensor), ignore load capacity and use performance criteria to address the 900mm lens - and select a head that will physically support the camera and lens. I have never heard of anyone complaining they bought too much tripod, but 1000s of unsatisfied owners of less than adequate tripods, like yourself, looking for something better.

Well, I went back to that swapmeet, already scared off about the 2008 Apple laptops by warnings from Ugly Hedgehog members. Anyway, those sellers weren't there that day. So, thanks to good guidance from several Hedgehogs, I'll look to buying from Apple's refurbished-with-warrantee-&-support store. Also, I wouldn't want to buy used razorblades repackaged (& claimed to be sharpened) at the "flea market" run by that squatters' haven, "The Slabs" near Niland at the Colorado River. I mention this because it is only apx. 3 miles from "Salvation Mountain", a photo-interest site that maybe still has its own website about the "plein air nature folk artist".
