SX50: Help with ID'ing a bird of prey

I shot this bird of prey on my neighbor's lawn with the Canon SX50. It appeared to be tearing up nesting material similar to that from a stuffed animal. After some distant shots, I tried to get a closer view. The bird quickly retreated to a distant tree. Can anyone identify this bird for me? Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Lee

Those rusty-colored tail feathers are your clue.

The Auburn University Raptor Center took a closer look at the photos and determined that it was feasting on something, possibly a squirrel as there is evidence of blood on its beak.

Yes, I was going to say that those are feathers of an unlucky bird meal, although looking closely at #2, it could be a bunny or other mammal. Beautiful redtail hawk!

Thanks, Linda. When I walked over to view the residue, it looked synthetic. Now that I have looked at larger images, I can see the squirrel that he carried to the tree when he retreated.

9 times out of 10, if a hawk is on the ground, it's either just caught prey, or it's dining on prey.

Great photos! How do you like your SX50? I got one for Christmas and am still learning. It's fun to play with!

Thanks for taking a look. I find it a great little camera. In fact, I use it more than my Nikon D80. It can be a challenge in low light but with patience and shooting lots of photos, you will get some keepers. Even in bright light, the camera will sometimes indicate "in focus" but the image turns out a bit soft. I also bought a spare battery, cable release and lens shade The filter adapter ring came in handy for some tests with filters I already had but I don't use it as much as I thought I would. I try to shoot in RAW as much as possible.
Take lots of photos and trust the Image Stabilization when not using a tripod. I also found that I rarely use the full telephotos capabilities of the camera. I'll be happy to try and answer any questions you may have about the camera.
Sincerely,
Lee

I also got a lens hood and shutter release as well as a filter ring adapter. I haven't tried shooting in raw yet, but will give it try. If I get stumped I'll give you a shout!
