Went through the Panama Canal last week (one more thing checked off my bucket list). It was really cool. We went through during the nighttime hours. One thing we passed while going through was a "dipper dredge." It was deepening the Culebra cut for the new bigger ships that the new locks will allow. As you can see by the photos, it was lit up like a Christmas tree. We were told this dredge has been working continuously at keeping the canal open since WWII.
All my shots were handheld from our moving ship using my D800 and my 16-35mm VR lens at 35mm. I had to take the ISO up to 6400 to get 1/45th second shutter speed. I was very pleased with the results. Not sure I've ever shot at that high an ISO.

Thanks Bob. I just kept cranking the ISO up till I had enough shutter speed. It was awesome seeing that dredge working in the middle of the night. I guess it works 24/7.

Fantastic images, great work.
Great use of high ISO to slow your shutter speed and get a clear sharp photo of night action. Nice going.
Thank you both for you kind comments.
Very good Greg, haven't seen one of those in years.
Remarkable to see so little noise at that high an ISO!

Part of the credit goes to the incredible D800. I also used the sharpening mask fairly aggressively in Lightroom. Still, I was as surprised as you.
My pleasure, ebbote and Mile. Thanks for viewing.

Perfect example of being at the right place, right time, and knowing what to do.
Well done.

For an "ancient mariner" like me, this demo of digital flexibility is simply incredible. I recall being astonished at Royal X Kodak rollfilm reaching ASA 400. Congratulations, Greg.

Thank you. It was quite a surprise to come upon this in the middle of the night. I just kept turning up the iso until I had a decent shutter speed.
