I LOVE my D3000 takes great photos, it awesome for beginners, its my first DSLR, and I am very happy with it... I got the kit with the 18- 55mm and have also purchased a 55mm-200mm lens... IMO as a newbie, its a wonderful camera...

...AND, KJGregor, you can take GREAT pics with it! I still have my D40- and still grin when I pick it up> The 18-55mm is a bunch of fun, I like being able to get 4" away from stuff, I still use it on a D90, let me find a pic...this was with the 18-55- I stuck it in his face and let it AF and started snapping! your 55-200 is a killer, bang for the buck lens too- WEAR THEM SUCKERS OUT HOMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok then. I knew somebody would chime in and have the real scoop. So... now does the person buy a D3000 or a D5100 to be the most satisfied for the long haul? I suspect they wouldn't like the D7000 price.

Personally I use a Nikon D90 and D7000. The D7000 is as advanced as I will ever need, but both take equally good pictures no matter what lens are used. I found that if there is a difficulty it is me not camera or lens.

Frank'sPhotography- You know, I was trying to make a point that was apparently lost on some folks- there will always be a latest and greatest bit o' kit that does it all and makes everything that came before it null and void- and that if YOU buy it- YOU will be the best photog because YOU own it!

I'm also looking at the d5100 kit with the same lenses you got. Costco had stacks of them a couple of weeks ago, but none right now.
So, are you happy with the 55-300? After seeing Rockwell's review, I was thinking of the 70-300. "Faster focus for action shots" which I think would be good for birds in flight and other wildlife. Bit more money though.

I use a D90 for macro-photography, and a D5000 with kit lenses for general photography. Both work to my absolute satisfaction. If I were in the market for a new, single camera, I would strongly consider the D7000 as first choice, and the D5100 as second choice, both with kit lenses.

My son and I both have the D3000 and could not be happier.
Sure, if we had unlimited funds we may have gotten a D7000, but for what we shoot, this is more than enough camera.
