You are correct - I CAN take the air rifle out and use it, but I was referring to the busy bodies that don't like to see anything out of the ordinary. As you'd know, if anyone reports 'someone walking around with a gun' the police would be here pronto (even though they've not got the no's to catch a real criminal). I want to keep the rifle, in the vain hope that one day I might move to somewhere where I can just plink at a row of cans - no questions asked.
The rifle is a .22, and just a tad below licensing force.

It was dropped from use by troops because of problems using it in the field and the amount of training it took to use it well. Compared to other muskets and rifles of the time it was also fragile.

It may have been fragile - but you did not have to worry about your powder getting wet! At this time there were no cartridges as we know them today. And there certainly were no rapid-fire weapons, so this rifle was truly extraordinary!

Subject: THE RIFLE THAT AMAZED THE INDIANS

This is the air rifle that Lewis and Clark took on their expedition and AMAZED the Indians!!! Very interesting. It takes 1500 strokes to pump this rifle to full pressure, after which it could shoot more than 400 .46 cal. round balls, each of which can blast a clean hole through a 1 inch pine board at 100 yards.

bcheary, you post very interesting things!

Remarkable!!

I had no idea that serious air weapons existed. I have been considering buying another home defense weapon for my wife. She has a hard time handling the recoil and flinch reflex, of traditional weapons. There are other high velocity/small caliber modern weapons that address this problem. I like that air rifles use large caliber bullets with apparent good stopping power. The silence of these weapons cuts two ways. Intruder(s) would not be intimidated by the sound but then they can be quickly neutralized and not know where the threat is coming from. Something to consider.

This is a VERY interesting gun ! O.K. how many of you very gun knowledgeable folks out there even knew that a rifle like this ever existed?, especially way back then? I hope you enjoy this like I did.

This video is with sound and great on full screen.

This is fascinating! However, via the State newspaper from Columbia, SC, there is a gentleman from Camden,SC, who states that he has the Lewis and Clark air rifle in his collection. Anywhere that you know of one can purchase a replica of this or a modern type just as powerful? Thanks for sharing the article.

not quite sure about air "guns" I have a shotgun certificate ans several shotguns also some air rifles, but my air rifles are only 177 and not very powerful, I believe (??) that there is a limit (above and below) for air guns here in the UK, some you can have without a license and some HAVE TO BE licensed, if it end up requiring a "Firearms Certificate" (for a rifled bore), you have 2 chances, fat chance and NO chance

Any air rifle that puts out more than 12 foot lbs. of energy has to be certified in the UK.

Here is a link to the best air gun forum I've ever found. I've been a member for around 12 years now,.,. You have to be a member to post. Joining only takes a few minutes. I bet you could ask about the rifle Lewis and Clark had and find out who now owns it,.,.

I heard the same thing..'Potomac'. By the way, the curator said 40 rounds, not 400 before the gun starting losing power.

For somebody like me who grew up using air rifles and still having one, I was amazed with this information. I never thought they had this type of rifle more than 200 years ago that also played a significant role in their exploration of the NW part of the USA. I thought this was a 20th century invention.
I thank you very much, bcheary, for this information.

Did the curator of the NFM say "…to the Cascades and the headwaters of the Potamac rivers…?" This was at the very end of the presentation. Pretty amazing air rifle though.

Yeah, I caught that too.

Fascinating. I've still got my Original 45 air rifle (under the bed) but scared to take it out as some do-gooder will report me and the police will confiscate it.

Scale it up and it tells me why we should keep SOME nuclear armaments.

Deterrents. :?:
