The SB-400 is a great flash! Discontinued, but readily available for ~$150.

The SB-400 was a great little flash. I have one. The low profile is great. There might still be some new ones around for sale. The new SB-500 has LED lights to assist when shooting video.

I have the the Nikon SB700 - it is simple but adjustable and powerful enough to fill every photographic situation I have encountered.

I have two SB600's that I am very pleased with. Discontinued now, but may find used/refurbished at a good price.

Hi.
Why not have a look at the specs for a Yongnuo flash unit...they are pretty dependable and, as far as am concerned, good value for money. Cheers

The best buy in a Nikon brand flash for the D5200 is a good used SB-600, they are plentiful in great condition. For brand new, the Nikon SB-700 is a good choice and the Meike MB-910 is also fully compatible.

+ 1.

If you want to save some money and want to stay with a Nikon flash, I highly recommend the D600. It is not made anymore but is easily found on EBay and used from many suppliers. It is more powerful than many newer models and can be triggered off-camera using Nikon's CLS system.

SB700 will work fine. SB500 is available, it adds a video light.

The flash I like the most though is the sb400.

I have read that quite a few people are not using Nikon flashes and are using:
Yongnuo YN560-III-USA Speedlite Flash with Integrated 2.4-GHz Receiver for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, GN58, US Warranty. (Amazon).
The Yongnuo has very good reviews and provides impressive flexibility ans is compatible with the wireless remote of the same brand. It is $75 +/- which is a compelling component of the flash.

I just bought a Nissin i40 for my d90. Tiny, light weight, swivils 270 and tilts 90 degrees, pretty good power, look it up. Hasn't been off my camera yet.

So long as you are aware that this flash will NOT TTL, then you are OK with them.

SB-700 would work just fine for most work. It largely depends on what you are shooting.

Forgot to add the little Nissin i40 is TTL and you can dial the + and - corrections. It does just about everything you could want a flash to do plus it is very small and light which is important to me. Here it is mounted on my 90.

I have an SB910 and I like it. I just purchased a Phottix Mitros+ as an additional unit and it appears to work just like the SB910. Check it out. Good luck.

Yongnuo is a good brand that is cheap but not cheaply made. Look on ebay.
