Pop up flash tries to pop up all the time.
External flash will not shoot, (it does shoot in test) while trying the reset flash setup thru the camera I continued to get " this menu cannot be displayed. incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off"
I guess I will have to take to a repair shop, Any recommendations in south jersey
If you provide more information, we may be able to help.

...
To clarify -
When shooting in Auto,
You have the speedlite in the hot shoe, and
and the pop-up flash tries to flash.

that is correct
In Auto your camera will do all it can to help you, including raising the pop-up flash when needed. Other modes have more control.
As to the rest, there's a switch under the rail of the hot shoe that tells the camera the speedlite is attached. It would be an assumption it's dirty and or not working.
You can try to clean it with a toothpick or paintbrush, but it may need service. Good luck. S-
As a side, and a last chance, you may also try resetting the camera. See your manual to learn how.
Don't know about So. Jersey. There's a good repair shop here in Columbus, OH that is authorized service for most makes. Contact Camtronics Camera Repair:
http://www.camtronicscamerarepair.com/ Their phone number is: (614) 483-5151.
cant find anything near the hotshoe. tried resetting the flash thru the cameras, but it looks like the connection between the two is not working
way different connection. I have 5 contact points on the hotshoe and 5 contact bump/pins on the flash
Have you tried calling Canon? I saw your original question about the flash. I thought I saw this problem once with a 7D and 580 flash I had prior, but since I don't have the camera any longer ... I wasn't sure what I could add from a vague memory. But, their technical support might be worth a try (and some of your time). I see ST3v3M gave an online reference. Have you searched the internet "thoroughly"? Another investment in time, but many times you can find that needle in a haystack ....
I would Google Canon, they probably have a list of authorized repair shops.
