I think thats good, Swede…after a long career as a medical professional I have watched many friends, customers and relatives suffer through long, painful deaths that were totally unnecessary…The Govt and/or church should have no say in ones choice of death…JMHO…Im sure many others here feel differently but for me I think its a personal choice.

I'm with you, I go further than you tho, I don't think it should just be terminal conditions tho, when you think of it, life is a terminal condition. I have a condition that will only become worse, much worse. My quality of life will be determined by what medications I take and how high I want to be. I don't want to face that, I'd rather just take a pill than whither away.

For Christian reasons, I also must disagree with assisted suicide. You have taken upon yourself, that which only God has the right to do. Its his position only!, to decide the day you will die. In Matthew 5:21 below Jesus said that you should not kill, this comes from the Greek root word “murder”, which some Bible versions quote here. Since any form of being involved in taking your own life is murder, you can see it is not taken lightly by God.

I would not even consider in the slightest! to do so. Especially for Christians, I would not go so far to say it would cost your Salvation; but I would say it would result in loss of a reward. How serious would that be - well on that I will let you decide.

"Matthew 5:21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:" KJV

Singing Swan,

Very well said. I never have understood why people imply a negative form to the saying "He was treated like a dog." We lovers of animals should all be so lucky.

First let me start off by saying I respect your religious beliefs and your right to believe them. My intentions are not to offend anyone.
Second I know very little about most religions. I have a few things that bother me though:
1. Why are there so many Gods and Religions?
2. What happens if you chose the wrong one? When you choose the wrong one and when you die and end up at, let’s say “The Happy Hunting Grounds” not heaven, what do you say and do now: “OOOPS-wrong one, that was a waste of time”.
3. Okay I’ll stick with Christianity because I know a little bit about it. What I get from Christianity is God was the maker of everything- he is the creator. He is supposed to be a kind, loving and forgiving God, He created you, me and the cat next door. Correct.
Okay you quoted Mattew 5:21 –Thou shall not kill. So Jesus is the messenger from God and these must be Gods wishes. If this is correct it would make God somewhat of a Hypocrite and he wouldn’t be so kind and loving. He also must of created the cancer cell, tobacco, measles, Pee Wee Herman and the list goes on. Why is that? Did he create it as a punishment; make you spend more money at the collection plate or something else.
A friend of mine’s mother died recently of cancer; she was a very devoted Catholic did everything by the book. She hung on far too long, it took a big toll on the family and they knew from the get-go she wasn’t coming out of the hospital. I had a beer with this friend of mine yesterday and I asked him if the family would have considered assisted suicide and he said, Yes.
There has to be a point if someone is in terrible pain and knows he/she will die soon or later, how can it not be within their rights to say I’ve had enough, let me go and talk to this God.
I’ll bet we’ll here from the medical community on this and they’ll say there is always hope. My point to that “What else are they going to say, for the amount of money they make keeping us alive.”
This whole system is screwed up, priorities in the wrong places.

AGAIN this is just my opinion I’m not out to offend anyone. But I know there will be some of the more delightful members that will try and rip me to shreds, Oh well
Quantity is not Quality.

Swede, there are many questions and I sure don't have the answers, years ago, I decided there was nothing more there - there was nothing in my heart and in my head that led me to believe there is a god. Sometimes I actually wish I did because when a friend goes into the hospital or something, it'd be so much easier to join the others saying, "I'll pray for you." I guess that's the pat answer but I can't say it.

My sister died a long drawn out death from breast cancer. It really killed my father too knowing his child died before him. He followed her to the grave 6 months later to the day. I remember sitting in the hospital with her, she was more dead than alive yet that god wouldn't take her. That was the time, I was pushed over the edge completely as for even remotely believing. I didn't let go without a fight, I called that god every name I could think of while the christians were saying, "He has his reasons." I'd bite my tongue.

If there is a god, he's an evil sort. I'm glad I crossed him off my Xmas card list!

Donna first sorry about you losses, I am in 100% agreement with you. If god created every thing what is the point of cancer ect. All religion is is a big business to me it has no useful function. If all the people on this planet gave up religion 90% of the wars would end, maybe all of them.
Your post is one of my favorite in this thread Thanks
