I have a Canon 40D with an L series 24-105mm lens. Our adult daughter wants a digital camera and judging by the shots she's taken on my camera I think she has a good eye for it. We want to get her one for her birthday but can't spend the kind of money I did on mine.

Which Canon DSLR entry level camera would you recommend? It's one thing to read the Canon site and do some research, but I'm looking for advice from people who have used the camera.

I have an ad from Best Buy for a Canon EOS Rebel T3 with a 18-55mm IS lens for $500. That's a bit more than I was hoping to spend - I was thinking more like $350 - but perhaps that's unrealistic. All suggestions are welcomed.

Try Keh or Adorama for used set up. I saw the other day they had some xsi at 175.00 with charger and batteries. You can pick up kit lens reasonable also.

Also Ebay for used gear. On Ebay, look at their feedback score, read some feedback for seller before you buy. I have had good luck with used gear from Ebay.

Why not look for a 20D or 30D with an 18-55 lens to get her started, plentyful and reasonably priced.

Might look at Refurb Rebel body, Friends and local camera shops might be a source. KEH, Adorama, Cameta Camera, B&H Sell quality used gear.

Might consider a bridge camera to get her on her feet.
I have a 40D and it is a great camera, Have you lookede at used 40D's?

Have you considered a bridge camera>?
How about a 20D or 30D? Inexpensive and plentiful.
40D's can be had for a decent price.

Have you l;ooked at Cameta Camera? KEH, Adorama, B&H? They all sell quality used gear.

Refurbs are an option,

Good luck, post what she shoots!

I like my t2i very much. Only $650 w/ kit lens at Amazon.

I bought a refurbed T2i and it's a pretty solid camera for the price.

now that the T3i is out I'm sure that the prices have dropped even farther.

PS: knowing what I know now...I'd skip the kit lens and buy body only.

Then I'd buy a nifty 50mm or something.

USed equipment fro a good dealer or camera shop. One of the local shop had a 30d for a great price, new in the box. Used equipment makes sense because if she loves it, she will upgrade in a year or two.

If you want a new camera, and that's what I'd recommend, as opposed to used, $500 is about the bottom of the food chain when it comes to dslr prices.

I shoot Canon as do you. I have the XS and the t1i and they're both excellent. I stick with Canon because of their attention to detail and their drive for quality products.

Perhaps you could have her kick in the other $150.

Good Luck

The xsi at that price is a darn good bet for more than just entry level. Sounds like a good deal if the condition is right.

My daughter was wanting the Nikon D3100 which was a bit pricey for us for a b'day present so we split the cost with her. If this is something she would like, she might be willing to do the same in order to get a better camera and lens.

It's hard to say weather your daughter is going to be faithful to the art. But I would get her a good PHD camera or to see if the interest will be there for her to want a more expensive T2I in the future. I started with a Pentax-K and took some classes on composure and It taught about depth of Different uses for lenzes ect. From ther I went to a Rebel film camera and now I have a T2i and love it. I don't have IS lenzes, I'm using the lenzes from my Rebel
