The ones that I have been looking at are DSLR. I have liked Nikon before but was told by a photographer in town to consider Canon. So I don't know. :(

I am not going to recommend the manufacture. When I am going to recommend is you find a place that has different cameras in stock so that you can handle them. This way you can see how a camera feels in your hand. Then you can do your research and decide if that's the camera you want.

So often people buy a camera because someone recommended it to them but they never handled it. When they get it they find it doesn't feel right in their hands and they're not happy with it. You need to find what feels good to you.

If you can't find a camera store in your area see if you can find a camera club. Most of the time the members won't mind if you hold their camera for a minute or two.

Hello there,
My name is Ang and I have always loved taking pictures. I currently have a Nikon DorP90 and I am not happy with it's quality of action pictures. I have been dubbed the group photographer for my daughters llama group. I was set on the Nikon 5300 but not I am second guessing myself. The main reason I decided on that one is the Wifi feature but now not sure if it's worth it or not. I need interchangeable lenses to get distance shots as well as action.

Thanks for any advice.

I have the D5300 and love it.
About buying it for WiFi...not a good reason. I have never used the WiFi function because, as I understand, it drains the battery faster.
Get an EyeFi card if you want WiFi uploading to your computer.
And, welcome to the UHH.

Shellback, thank you for these links. They are excellent, and I know that Ang, as well as many more of us Hoggers, are most grateful for your help. Jim

Thanks Jim,
I was lost when I first started and found that having the resources I was pointed to, or found, located in one spot made things easier for me - thought I would share ;)

Are you shooting in Auto or Manual? You should be able to set the shutter speed on that camera to overcome the 'blur' you speak of. A little more information on your settings may be more helpful.

What lenses and flash did you buy? Do the camera, lenses, and flash come with a Nikon USA warranty or are they gray market (also called imported). If they are gray market Nikon USA will not honor the warranty. Are they new or used?

I ask because a legitimate price for a new D7100 body with a USA warranty is $996.95 (B&H price). You said that you had $1000 to spend. A new Nikon USA D7100 with lenses and a flash for $1000 is either a great buy or suspicious.

Please let us know what you got and what you paid. I'd hate to see you get ripped off. There are a lot of crooks in the photo business.

"Crooks in the photo business"?!?!?!?! Noooooooo, it can't be. Let me tell you about lawyers, politicians, and now football teams. ;-) Just teasing.

The D7100 is a wonderful camera and good luck.

MarkD gave you some ideas on a Nikon with the 18-140 lens. Bestbuy.com has the D7000 with that lens for $630. That seems to be a great buy if it fit your needs. Nikon shooters can comment on that combo. I don't own a Nikon.

Maybe she got refurbished? I've been watching Cameta's price on refurbished, and it's $749 right now, and they have various bundles going too. She did say she went a little over her targeted budget.

Welcome to the Hog Farm.

You won't be disappointed with the D7100. If ever, that will be my next camera body. As I have the lenses I can justify to myself already.

You are already taking Beautiful Photographs.
Keep it up!

UHH is THE best place to learn.

I suggest that you look at refurbished models from the big 4 as mentioned above (B&H- Adorama- Cameta-KEH) Many here have, including me. Any DSLR with lenses could easly set you back 2 to 3 grand. The absolute best action camera is the new Canon 7dMk2 But the 7d can be had at bargain prices. Tne Nikon d7100 is another choice. A refurb 7d or d7100 are under $1,000. Depending upon your budget lenses can go for a few hundred to many thousands.

I agree that CDs (I think you mean DVDs) are not necessary, but there are some good ones out there if you wish to invest. I especially like "Tony Sweet's Visual Literacy" that takes the viewer on a photography workshop in the Great Smoky Mountains and afterward gives good hands-on advice about photo editing. Sweet is a wonderful photographer and a charismatic presence. He uses Nikon, and his equipment on this video is a little out of date, but his advice is timeless and useful for any camera brand.

The reasons for buying the D5300 over a D7100 include:
1. About 1/2 the weight.
2. About 1/2 the price.
3. Articulated screen.
4. Same picture quality.
5. Easier to use active and readable info screen compared to a bunch of buttons and unreadable little green screen on D7100.

The only time I'd recommend a D7xxx over a D5xxx is if you already own old lenses that need the focusing motor in the camera. Otherwise it is an additional feature to break. All new lenses include the focusing motor in the lens.

I owned a D5100 and tried going to a D7000. I got rid of it after a few months. My wife still has the D5100 and loves it.

Don't forget the biggest thieves of all, the banks and brokerage houses. When I got my BA in Economics and MBA in the 1960's I never thought that someday I'd be saying this.
