Help

....Sorry I can't seem to get this to work. If you send me a private message with your E-mail sddress I should be able to forward the article to you....Rich...............................................Font+ Font- Print Email Glossary On OffBookmark and ShareFor sports photographers and others taking action pictures, back-button AF lets you stop focus whenever something might interfere with the moving subject you’re tracking — without requiring you to stop shooting.
This article was updated on January 8, 2013 to include current products.

For years, Canon EOS cameras have offered photographers an option to change the way autofocus is activated. Often referred to by pros as “back-button AF”, this feature lets the user customize the camera so that focusing is performed by pressing a rear button with the photographer’s right thumb. The shutter button still wakes up the camera with a half-press, and fires the shutter with a full press downward.

By separating AF activation from shutter release, it’s possible in some cases to be more effective with AF, and not have the focus thrown off if something momentarily enters the picture area while you’re shooting.

Canon was actually the world’s first camera maker to incorporate such a feature, launching it back in 1989 with the EOS 630 (35mm film SLR). All current EOS digital SLR models have this feature in the camera’s Custom Functions, including the EOS Rebel models, going back to the Rebel XT and XTi.

Uh, do you have a camera manual?

Hi; Yes I do have the manual but it only tells me how to activate the BBF but not how to deactivate it. should be easy retrace the steps but I don't remember how it was set up before.

Go to Menu, Camera Menu (one to the left of the My Menu settings), Operation/Others, Custom Controls (1st set), press Set, then the icon for your shutter button (1st one)and set it to Metering and AF Start. Hit Set to set it back to where it was.

Canon... humm.
I believe I'd adjust it with a finely tuned hammer. But that's just me.

You can always go back to factory settings but 1/2 shutter press will probably still work even if you are using BBF. I use bbf on my7d all the time but 1/2 shutter press still works.

In your case the shutter still activates the AF because you really didn't set up BBF. The AF-ON button is set to AF and metering by default. When setting up Back Button Focusing, the shutter button is modified within the custom functions so it no longer auto focuses with a half press and focusing is accomplished solely with the back button.

Doesn't work that way on my 7d. When I have AF-ON set up for BBF the 1/2 shutter press will still focus. There is no way to shut 1/2 press off. I just tried 1/2 sitll works no matter what I do.

It should have worked if you modified the custom function below to take AF off the shutter button as part of the standard BBF set up procedure

Custom Function Group IV - Operation/Others settings
C.Fn IV -1 – Custom controls

In a break from the other cameras in the EOS range, the EOS 7D allows you to map the function of all the buttons on the camera to adjust their function to suit your needs.

The most common usage for this will be to set back-button focus. This is done by setting the function of the shutter button to either ‘Metering start’ or ‘AE Lock’, and either the AF-On button or AE Lock button to ‘Metering and AF Start’.

The function of the multifunction button can also be changed to one of Flash Exposure Lock, AE Lock, One-touch RAW+JPEG shooting or activating the electronic level in the viewfinder.

Press the "Q" button. Navigate to the bottom rightmost ikon. Press "set". That will take you to the menu that allows you to custom set many of the buttons on the camera. You need to set the shutter release button to focus and meter.
