Did you get it as an iso file?
Yes, then I used "isotousb" to create a bootable usb stick

Well, maybe I'll try it. What OS were you using before?

I had windows 8.1 update 1, and I hated it. I had put win 10 onto a dead computer, after months of trying to get replacement win 7 discs. I liked win 10 instantly, (as much as I hated 8.1) It took me a while to get rid of the gestures, because my new laptop had the touchpad controls so deeply embedded (not proud of that)
I recommend win 10. They warn against using it on a primary machine, so make a good back-up before installing if that's what you intend to do. It does play up a bit sometimes, but that's part of the fun!
Thanks so much. Time to think forward and to think about getting over XP.

My hard drive has crashed and I guess I did not create a backup disc for windows 7 and a boot disc when I got the computer a couple years ago. Got it from Dell. Any idea if I even can or is it possible to download my licensed copy from the internet when I replace the hard drive? The computer did not come with a disc of the software programs. Thanks...
Ask anyone with windows 7 to make a system repair disc. It should boot up any computer running win 7. Give that a try before wiping the hard drive.
If you write the Manufacture or call them and give your model an serial number they can send you a re install disc. This happened to me with my HP and they helped me with out a problem.

How does one make a system repair disc?

I cannot remember for win 7, but if you search "help" it should give step by step instructions.
It's so long since I used 7, I have forgotten all the settings.

Great! Thanks for the very useful information.

Really good, and thank you. I have an HP with Windows 7, so I shall call them for a re install disc.
Thanks again.
Seems my CD/DVD drive is read only. Can I put it on a thumb drive? Thanks for all the information, too.

yes, but you may have to go into the bios and change the boot order. That info should all be in the link i posted for you. I am no computer expert.
