Is this flare caused by a firmware problem? I thought it was an assembly/hardware problem.
My D750 has no issue by the way.

how can one be certain to buy this camera and know the "flare" problem has been fixed
The fixed units will have a black dot in the tripod ring hole.

correct, this is a AF module assembly problem.
Some people reporting (on DX forums) have said that Nikon is replacing the entire sensor-mirror box in the affected D750's.

It's good that Nikon has learned their lesson from the D600 disaster. I guess eventually I will send mine in just to be safe. But like I said I don't see any sign of the issue.... and I've tried to produce it.
Looked on line. B&H has the 750 on back order

No problems with mine, either. I just finished a two-day assignment--no hint of flare problems in bright back lighting situations. (Might always using lens hoods have something to do with it?)
So, Nikon can recall the D750s all they want--mine's staying right here with me.

I got my D750 when they first arrived along with a 14mm F2.8. I had some flare problems with both indoor and outside shots. Since the 14mm prime wasn't really a good fit for the use I needed it for, I returned it and got the 16-35 F4 instead. I've had no issues at all with the 16-35 after thousands of shots both indoors and out.
Didn't test it with any other faster glass though.
Well - I went onto the Nikon web site and submitted my serial # and I'll be shipping my D750 back tomorrow. :/ I couldn't replicate the issue but I'm following the instructions I got after I sent my #

https://support.nikonusa.com/app/D750/snNikon Canada is also addressing this issue. This is part of the text from a notice they sent in reply to a question:
"On December 29, 2014, we announced that we were looking into measures to address the issue reported by some users, namely that when photographing scenes in which an extremely bright light source, such as the sun or high-intensity lighting, is positioned near the top edge of the frame, flare with an unnatural shape sometimes occurs in images captured with the D750 digital SLR camera.
To correct this issue, Nikon will inspect and service, at no cost, the cameras light-shielding components and adjust the AF sensor position. We plan to initiate this service at the end of January and will announce further details, including instructions for requesting servicing, shortly."
I hope it's a quick turn around. I also asked them to clean my sensor...at my expense. :)

It doesn't seem to fall within a fixed serial number range. It's not clear how one will know if it has been fixed.
It's easy to demonstrate the problem when it exists. Using live view, point the camera so a bright light source is just above the center of the frame. If you have the problem, there will be a somewhat distinct horizontal banding. Rotate the camera 180 degrees and the banding disappears.
Mine has the problem, but I'm heading off for 2 months and will have to wait until I get back to send it in.

I purchased the D750 from Adorama on the 3rd. Received it on the 5th. It is a great Camera but has this issue shooting sunsets. Nikon is suppose to be coming up with a fix. I contacted them Monday they are supposed to let me know when there is a fix. I might have to send them the camera so they can adjust the mirror. Not to happy about this....

It's not a firmware problem. If a camera has the issue it must be sent to Nikon to correct it.
