I always pass up my target subject and then try approach at the right light angle. I believe I was successful on this photo.

Excellent focus, I do like how the light is playing through his feathers. I also like that you have him diagonal across the image. The only thing I wish is that your background was something other than deep blue sky.

Thanks CM, I can take credit for the focus and lighting angle. The Red-tailed made that nice diagonal turn. I hope to catch one below or level me with nice OOF earth tone back ground.

Beautiful sharp shot of the elusive Red Tailed Hawk. They ususally fly so high, it's hard to get a decent shot .. that and the photographer is always fighting backlight as you are here. Even though that is true, you did an amazing job of exposing for the hawk. I think the shadows could be lightened a bit, but man I love that light coming through the tail feathers. I think you did a good job reducing any noise and sharpening. This looks like a shot in which you had to push your equipment's limits.

I like this photograph as it is. To me I feel the hawk has found a morsel and is going for it.

The composition, exposure, focus are well done.

Personally, I think the solid blue back ground makes the hawk stand out and does not detract from the Hawk as some other background possibly would.

I believe that typically when looking up like in this photograph the underside of a bird is darker; but, you may want to try to lighten the underside some if it will bring out the detail. The feather highlighting is very well done.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks Dave for taking time to point out the strong parts and the weaker.

Very nice capture, color and composition...I DLled the image and added some backlight to the entire image, brightened the eye and sharpened the entire image a bit...seemed to add even more drama to the image and brightened the under body nicely.
