Is it safe to attach a sling strap to the bottom of the battery grip that is attached to a 7100?

Is it an OEM battery grip? If so Nikon sells the Black Rapid Sling strap which indicates they are comfortable with the strap being used. Also the OEM grip has a metal frame that is much like the case of the D7100 unlike some of the aftermarket brands and for me that was the deciding factor. I use a Black Rapid on my D7100 with an OEM grip without fear and the sling straps make carrying the camera comfortable. By the way Nikon's price on the Black Rapid strap is higher than from Black Rapid so I would recommend buying from Black Rapid.

I used my BR sling on a D7100 with a cheapie grip - never had a problem, but it was always in the back of my mind that the grip is all plastic and the tripod mount could pull out.....

I have since had connection problems with the cheapie grip so removed it and connect my BR strap to the camera tripod slot.

I will be adding a Nikon grip in the near future - I feel it is the best choice.

In my opinion, if you have a non-nikon grip, you take a chance, unless it has metal support inside to make you feel comfortable.

I wouldn't myself. Not as a single support system.
I do have a battery grip on my D3300, and I have an Op-tech sling for my camera.
The connectors were attached to the OEM sling brackets on the camera body.
Those are where the manufacturer intended for the camera to be strapped from.
But I watched this Optech video and I'm experimenting with the right side OEM sling mount, and the battery grip bottom sling mount. My battery grip has both a tripod socket, and a sling attachment point on it.
I think I really like it configured so the attachments are all on the right side.

In a single attachment configuration:
The first major advantage is the sling strap and connector hang completely down out of the way from the bottom of the battery grip. Solves some big irritations for me when walking/shooting.
I guess that IF I drop my camera with only one attachment, AND it fails at the battery grip attachment.
Well, I guess I was supposed to upgrade, and learn the lesson.

In a dual attachment configuration:
My camera hangs to my side in what I think is a better position for just transport carry.

Summation is maybe this old dog found a new trick to work with. I can unsnap the top connector and do the quick draw while still having the security of at least trying to save the rig if I drop the camera.

I wouldn't. But then I would never use any strap attached to the cameras tripod socket.
Use a sling designed for the cameras strap lugs and you will never have an issue.

I am glad to hear this from you MT Shooter!

I heard some horror stories about camera's dropping from their BR straps, and I didn't want my tripod socket used anyway, as I shoot with a tripod. Meanwhile I am very happy with my 20 dollar Optech strap, but for those who want more options, Optech has all sorts of them.

Before anyone spends big bucks on a BR I would suggest a look at Optech's website. It's not just to save money, but to also end up with a product that may well perform better, and certainly safer, as well.

I feel pretty confident in this arrangement. The upper connector is attached to the regular Nikon strap mount.
Popping it loose still allows connection at the bottom, with a little peace of mind the gear is still secure.
That other thing is my hand strap.

Thank you all for your input. My grip is a Nikon grip. I wanted to experiment with the sling straps without risking my gear. I also use a tripod and monopod often. I was looking for feedback before I purchased a strap.

I use a black rapid with my D7100 and battery grip.. no worries here, the black rapid can also be attached to the 'strap lugs' for those who don't trust the battery grip..

Blah blah I wouldn't... Nonsense.

I have been using Black Rapid straps since introduced. Shoot sporting events w/long glass. Been pulled, hooked, rained on, run, jump, tripped fall, plowed into. Best strap out there. Haven't lost a camera yet. Get one. You will not be sorry. No I don't work for them. If someone has had the 1/4-20 receiver pulled out of their camera body I would love to see the pictures. Must have been dragged in two directions by elephants.😄

Sling

I never use them. They scare me.I have a lot invested in my D7100. If you do use them I would suggest getting insurance coverage on your camera set-up. This is What I have on my Pentax K10d. Its professional but covers my needs.
