"Ask Yousuf Karsh"

Not sure what "Karsh" means, but the question was a rhetorical one. If I had an unlimited budget and a half dozen people to help, I think I could come up with something dramatic---maybe not?

These explain Karsh better than I can. It is interesting to note that, although he could easily assemble a willing staff, Karsh preferred to work alone. His portrait of Winston Churchill and the gimmick that he used to capture the facial image was a stroke of brilliance!

Wow, this looks awesome, and looks like it may save me lots of money I was going to spend on a creative Live tutorial by Ben Willmore, although the previews I have caught from him before I have really liked.

Thanks for this tip

I also consider myself an amateur. I really like watching free training videos by Anthony Morganti. I started with Lightroom training and now have downloaded almost 200 of his photo critiques. I put them on a thumb drive and watch them on TV. They look great. His stuff is available on youtube or his website.

Let me know if this is helpful.

Thanks

Thanks... learn something new every day. However, it doesn't really satisfy my observation that studio lighting and a large format camera might be necessary for a how-to video of this kind.

Regardless, I do know that Phil Steele has a how-to video for taking "professional looking" head shots with just a mediocre camera and a cheap flash. However, he doesn't address the added challenge of a "dark location".

I really like this guy. I learned so much about Lightroom. Also his critiques are short and great for general tips about shooting almost any kind of photography. Let me know if you also find them helpful.

He's great.. sometimes he has trouble expressing himself, but he uncovered a few very helpful tips. Very easy to understand. Thanks again for the link.

Karsh was one of the premier portrait photographers, taking classic black and white photographs of Winston Churchill, Liz Taylor, et al. Some of the finest portraiture I've seen.

It's refreshing to know there are still people out there who remember and appreciate Yousuf Karsh and his work. The main reason I mentioned him in the first place was his amazing work with minimal lighting.

Then I wondered... is it even possible to create "dramatic portraits in dark locations" with just one moderately priced camera, a flash and maybe one or two props? :-)

Mark, here is a photo (Dramatic w/1 light) that I did. One light with a snoot made from foil. So, yes, it can be done. Now, shoot your shot!
