Carol Walker is an excellent Horse Photographer. Here is the link to her site: http://www.livingimagescjw.com/

She has an wonderful book "Horse Photography" that gets right down what focal lengths are best and what shutter speeds work for which gaits. One thing I remember is she suggests at least 300mm for domestic horses and maybe 500 mm for wild mustangs. Probably more than a question of what camera, is what telephoto zoom lens to get so that you have the appropriate focal length and aperture you need.

Good luck! Great to find another horse person.

Hi
Check in your area for a photo club. Set up a shoot with them to do your horses. Our club has people from start to pro and we do it for fun all grades of cameras from D40 to D3x if you get the pictures you see what camera and lens they used buy it join the club and some in the club will teach you how to use it and avert the mistakes they made. Our club also has a lot of models and if they do one can hold the halter strap.

You let on that you know little about photography but need photo support. I shoot a Sony AX, so I am biased. However, I have recommended several persons with little experience to use Sony photographic equipment. They are happy with Sony. I support the SONY over my old Nikon for several reasons important to your described need. Sony lens are much faster and quieter than Nikon or Cannon. The camera's frames per second meets or beats the field. Megapixel sizes are competitive. Stay away from Tamron A-mounts (performance is noticeably lower). They are noisy and slow. Memory stick picture capture is extremely fast. In addition, you should kit-up with a few telephoto lenses. My son runs marathons and the like. I focus on him as far away as I can and shoot continuous until his number disappears going away. In a digital world, there is no waste in shooting a lot of throwaway pics. However, I seem to get better-adjusted shoots with the camera in AUTO than people standing near me using brands that are more common. It could be the same with horses.

I breed, show and raise show quality Arabians and colored Half Arabians and need to know what is the best camera to take action shots of horses in motion. Since my photograper no longer works here I need to learn to do this myself. I need photos for stallion cards and really good photos of foals for sale.
I plan on taking a few courses on photography and web design.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

any name brand quality bridge camera will fill the bill.
Whats your budget? for 200 yhou can buy a Kodak camera, for 38000 you can buy a hasselblad 50 mega pixel rig

P.ace.ugly that is right I am a learn as I go person. I know what I like and what I want. I am not just up on the equipment. I still use a Poloriads on some things. I do not know much about photography but know a good picture when I see it. That is why I am taking a photography and web design class for myself not to become a professional. It would save me about $2,500.00 per year to do my own photos and site. But looking for the right equipment the first time so I do not have to buy again for a few years.

The suggestions on this site has really given me things to look into now.

Glad to give a helpful response. All who use cameras are not pros or highly skilled amateurs. Post so we know how things work out.

Most "Point & Shoot" cameras will do. Use a fast shutter speed, and go to "Sport" mode on camera.
Join your local camera club.

bmbrown - as you have discoverd there arer so many different cameras, each with its own wrinkle(s). What I did some time ago is that I took a look at what I wanted to capture and what would be best for that. I wanted dragon flies in everyday, not "posed" activities - flying, eating, mating, etc. Without going into a lot of detail I bought a Nikon D3 and its 70-300 lens for that, but not only that, job and I have been well satisfied.
