Bird Photography in South Florida

My wife and I will be on our first trip to South Florida, near Bonita Springs, for 10 days in February. We want to do some bird photography. From Google we have located some of the popular locations such as the Everglades, Big Cypress, and Corkscrew. Wondering if anyone has any smaller out of the way places where we might set up to photograph. Thanks in advance.

Shark Valley is excellent for birds and gators. Easy access about an hour from Bonita with many good photographic opportunities on the way over on 41 (Tamiami Trail). Wildlife there is familiar with people so lots of close shots. Take a pod anyway. Also visit Clyde Butcher's store on the way over or back.

You might want to look up the local Audubon Society for that area. If you were to be able to locate them and find their Nature Center then they will have flyers and most likely someone there volunteering who can possibly help lead you to tell you where the best birding places would be in the area.

Go all the way down 41 almost half way to Miami Williams pull off has an excellent viewing area.

On the way from Bonita to the Everglades-on your way back from Chocalatsee or wherever you go-watch the East side of the road for photo ops. The sun will be behind you and after 4 or so there will be many Egrets etc in the trees along the bank. There is a ditch and creek there which they hunt in. Be careful stopping and quiet getting out. Stay between the car and the birds. Most shots will be less than 30 feet. Good luck-use the biggest mm lens you have and lean on the car for support-oh close the door slowly-the birds spook at the sound. Good thing is they are used to the sound and movement of the traffic.

Try to make it to the Everglades down by Homestead. The Anhinga Trail is a great spot to see Anhingas, Cormorants, Green Herons and a lot of other birds. If you get lucky like we did, you will see Anhinga colts (chicks) on nest very close to the boardwalk. Also continue down to Flamingo and see the ranger there about good trails to walk down in that area. Kayaking is also good down there for Brown Pelicans, White Pelicans and lots of shorebirds. The Tamiami Trail (hwy 41) is a great drive for birds. Stop at the Big Cypress Vistor's Center for alligators, Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills and a lot of other birds.

Birds don't know they should stay in popular places so you can go just about anywhere around Bonita, Lover's Key, Marco Island, and Sanibel Island and find area native birds near the Gulf waters walking around looking for fish. There's also a Naples Zoo just 15 miles south of Bonita Springs.
