I have purchased several factory refurbished Nikons from B&H. No problems whatsoever. The only difference that I know of is the length of the warrantee period (six months instead of a year).

If the factory is in Japan, are they actually sent to the "factory" to be refurbished?

Yay, my 5 seconds of fame have arrived! I asked the dumbest question of the day! Outstanding! Thanks for your response it made my day. And thanks to the other respondents who answered this newbies question with intelligence and respect! you're the best!

And the good thing about this newer post of yours is you now have 6 posts. Some members seem to feel your intelligence gets better with more posts. You could be a prize winning photographer for National Geographic but if you only have a few posts to your credit then you don't know what you are talking about. Stick with us. You will get there.

Welcome aboard,

Dennis

Bought a factory refurbished Nikon D5300 with warranty via Amazon.

The camera is 100% with no signs of previous use.

Cameta camera also deals with factory refurbs. Great people to deal with and the give a 0ne year warranty with the camera. That's a win-win situation. I've bought refurbished from them before and they are fantastic.

I wonder if the OP has minimal experience with purchasing cameras and/or has minimal cash to spend and is looking for a bargain. Quite possibly, while most of us here on the UHH, have experience buying cameras and don't mind spending thousands of dollars, he may not. He may have no idea what refurbished really means and/or who does the actual refurbishing. Is it some camera shop on the corner, is it the camera manufacturer, is the camera sent back to the manufacturer in Japan or is it done right here in the U.S. Lots of questions there. I think an honest survey of even experienced photographers might show many who don't know any better than the OP.

I see the OP has 5, count em, 5 posts here. Is it possible you jumped on him a bit too quickly with humor and sarcasm in your attempt to make fun of him?

Easy to forget that there are those in the world honest enough to admit they don't know it all.

Another alternative buying method is found on the BestBuy website. It's the Open Box option. I recently got a $212 camera for $130, and it has all the warranties and return options as an unopened box.

Classy! Buy refured, save and be happy. The Cameta add on warranty sounds like a good thing. Keep posting.

It would be nice if we had the option not to see the posts of certain people.

I just got a 'refurb' SX50 from Canon. If it wasn't new, you couldn't tell it wasn't. Half price of new retail, same warranty, can't beat it.

Refurb Olympus E-PL5 from Cameta in July 2013. Still works perfectly.

Thank you young Djacks My reply was obviously tongue in cheek and meant to make you smile.
I knew you would get all the "normal" replies you could ever need and I do not do normal. One word re further posts this is actually a photography site so its meant for posting pictures as I see it. You will notice that many who pontificate about gear either do not or rarely post a photograph? Then look at their profile and you see they have a huge collection of cameras and lenses and are very proud of the fact it seems. Why? Cos I think they sit around all day polishing their collection rather than get out and shoot.
Now ol' Billy struts his stuff with a very old very battered Pentax with a kit lens, take note here I do not call myself Pentaxman or Pentak23 or Pentaxshooter etc, I take around 500 photos each week and post on here very regularly. Many my friend talk the talk but fail to walk the walk.
So good luck with your purchase and i wish nothing but happiness and a long life together for you and your new camera. If you really want to drag all the turkeys out of the hen house post "Should I buy a Nikon 7100 or a Canon 5d Mark 3. You start em off and I'll return to mock em!!

Very pleased to make your acquaintance my man

Billyspad

Ditto Speedy. A couple months ago, I bought a Canon G16 (list $450) open box at BB for $300. Pays to keep the eyes open, deals do come up.
