A follow up question...would it be a better idea (money wise) to look for a used D800 or D800e, instead of a D810? Would I notice a difference?

A much better idea- difference only visible if you blow it up large and get close! And all three beat the 610 and 750 for IQ by a greater margin.

You might compare them on DXOMark. Not sure if they have the D750 yet, though.

I doubt you'd be able to see differences due to the camera in any reasonable size printed images.

The DxO results...

Is Snapsort a legitimate source for camera comparisons?
They gave the D810 vs. D610 a tie!

Yes, they are a generally good resource as well as DXOMark. I feel the latter is a bit more technical in their testing. In both cases you need to look at the details of the rating approach to ferret out what might mean most for you.

Snapsort actually tied them but their reasons to buy the D610 are a bit off: they give a reason to buy it as the internal flash. The D810 has the same flash.

I think the D8xxs lead if you are doing a lot of wildlife which normally involves substantial cropping. The D810 would lead them if shutter noise is an issue for you also: the D800 and makes a nice satisfying thunk each time you operate the shutter.

I suspect all are indeed about equal for full frame images. You might get a bit more dynamic range from the D610 because of the larger pixels.

Thanks MtnMan! I have been trying decide on either a D610, a used D800 or bite the bullet and get a D810. Currently, I only shoot nature and landscapes, but I am looking down the road to the day when I get good enough to shoot a wedding, plus I have one daughter graduating college this summer and another graduating in 2 years. I'd like to get nice shots of those occasions.

I use an 800e and I looked to upgrade to the 810. To tell you the truth, I did not see enough of a difference to shell out the extra bucks. If money is an issue, I would look for a used 800.

Yes, but...I'd look for a Nikon refurbished one. That's how I got my D800 coming up on two years now. It came in new condition with no shutter activations and still works like a charm.

Nikon only provides a 90 day warranty on refurbs but if you get from Adorama or Cameta (and probably B&H but I'm not sure) they throw in (Cameta) or only charge a nominal fee (like $8) to get their warranty to extend to one year.

I feel refurbs are better than new. They have had their early failure (if any...many are retuned demos) and have been individually checked out by a Nikon tech. So far have had great luck with three Nikon refurbs.

You take more risk with a used one. But I have been satisfied with one used Nikon lens I bought from a UHHer.

I think the D810 is by far the most intelligent.
With the D610 coming in Second smartest.
But the D750 is just a hood punk with gold teef...

That said....
I don't think I would turn any of them down if you wanted to give me one....

Now I am wondering if the D810 is better in cold weather than the D7100? My D7100 acts up un 20-30 degree temps. I lose the lcd screen and the f-stop reads 0 at times.

I had no problem with my D800 at minus 40 in Northern Sweden last January. Batteries stop working after about half an hour though, but fully recover once warmed up.
