Hi, new here. Just had a bit of exercise doing an edit....here is the before an after.....some of the edits look a tad flat/gray on my monitor. But as all monitors are different, it's hard to judge...
Original on left, my edit in CS5 on the right.

So this is a photo that's been giving me a bit of frustration for a while. It's not of much importance to me, but it's an interesting PP challenge.
I took this after a friend had shot a few pictures and I didn't realize he had set my camera to shutter priority at 1/3200, so I ended up exposing at ISO 2000, getting a lot of noise, and faded colors. (he also set the picture style to my Technicolor Cinestyle preset, which I reserve for tweaking on video shoots, so colors are faded at all ISOs.) I recently tried fixing it up in GIMP (That's all my budget can take, no Lightroom here), and I just can't quite make them pop. Any suggestions? or did the high shutter speed/ISO (and Cinestyle - in case you're wondering, never use Cinestyle for stills) just mess it up too much?

here is what I came up with using lightroom.

I took the liberty to play with it a little. PS5 with Nik plugins. But most every reply has it correct. Saturation, contrast, noise & sharpen. There always is the tendancy to over process giving you flat skin textures - almost mannequin like. Also over-saturated colors.
I love the photo though - fun and happy.

P.S. sorry for the double post - I attached the wrong edit to the first.

I'm not a pro, but I would just adjust the contrast a little. GREAT shot!!

On a side note I noticed not many people working their beautiful eyes. I did some dodging and color burn on the eyes as well in this.

A little lighter PP touch - adjustment brush -1 exposure on background, +.3 on the faces. A touch of clarity and sharpness, adjusted white balance, crop.

Here's my try in LR5.7.

One trick for people pop, or any pop for that matter, is to go all the way to the bottom of the develop module to the Blue Primary "Saturation" slider. Move it to the right until desired "pop" is achieved.

One thing you might try is bumping up the contrast in the camera. I've done this on all my Canon dslr cameras and it really makes a difference.

Great advice! Contrast makes all the flat, out of camera pictures roar!

When your camera gives you lemons....

Rather than trying to make an image with blown out details look ok, and dealing with the color shifts and the crazy gradient sky that seems to happen whenever you try adding contrast or "clarity"....convert and recrop to remove the distracting hot spots and excessive sky. Smart Sharpen 259%, 3.2px radius, remove noise 10%.
Add Adjustment Layer Mask Black and White, add Adjustment layer Curves and pull down the shadows a bit, and the highlights up.

Lemonade....:-) Due to limitations of uploading big files this probably isn't the best but it would print fine full sized.
