Mark, for the uninitiated like me, why is knowing your shutter count important?

Hi Jim, manufacturers will say that the shutters on a particular camera is guaranteed for xx amount of actuation's. Knowing your shutter count is akin to knowing the mileage on your car. If you are selling your equipment your camera could be more favorable to some people if it has a low shutter count, you may not want to pay out a lot of money for a used camera which has a very high shutter count. Therefore it's good to know this information.

Personally I do not get hung up on my shutter count, I purchased my cameras to use them, all of my equipment is extremely well looked after and if I were to sell a body it would be sold at a fair price taking the number of actuation's into account.

Hope that helps you and others. Cheers, Mark

Why does it matter what the count is?

My Norton internet security reported this site as dangerously infected. Maybe they're being overcautious but I thought I'd let you all know.

The shutter count programs seem to be only for DSLR cameras. Are there sites to check my Nikon P520 or Nikon Coolpix S9100? Or is the information even available?

You need to understand a false positive. Many anti-virus programs with heuristics detection make bad judgement calls. I've scanned this exe with several programs and it's clean. This is another reason I abandoned Norton and McAfee a decade ago.

You're welcome to your own opinion and I won't argue with you but I'm qualified to say this as I've gone to school for computer repair and networking and been building them for 18 years.

If you look at my post you will see that I had my doubts, but I also felt it was wise to flag it. I never told anybody what to do.

I read your post and I responded accordingly. Opinions without proof can prove to be disruptive.

I'm running Eset Nod virus protection for years now, if there was a real issue Eset would definitely kicked me out.

Not my opinion. Just passing on a flag by an accepted anti-virus program. Just in case . . . .

Jimmy - All Canon cameras track the info, it is just hard to find where it is hidden. The Dire Studio program works and does the job well for $2.99 and no worry about BS from the free sites that mostly do not work with Canon.

Well you say that but Canon told me just the opposite so who's to believe who. Doesn't matter to me since I keep the successive numbers and track it that way but thanks for the information.

Now here's a switch. My new Canon 70D counts number of pictures taken on the BATTERY! So you can get the info somewhere on the Menu (check guide as to how). And if you use more than one battery just add the totals together.

The menu item that shows battery information does not keep a running total for the shutter count. The shutter count on the battery is the number of actuations since the last battery charge, when you charge the battery the shutter count for the battery resets to zero. If you have a battery grip, it shows info for both batteries in the grip and the shutter counts shown are for the individual battery. If you take the battery out of the camera and put it back in without recharging it will retain the shutter count.
As soon as you recharge the battery it goes back to zero.

fyi

This is one change Canon should make. When people spend hundreds of dollars for a camera, they should be able to get the shutter count.

it's not working...I hope I'm doing it right...
#1. USB cable from camera to computer
#2. turn on camera
#3. go to link on computer http://www.camerashuttercount.com/
#4. click on "browse"
#5. find "canon T1i" in my computer...open
#6. find last photo taken and hit ...open
#7. on website above click on "upload"
#8. response..."Your camera doesn't add shutter count information to images.
Click here for an alternative piece of Mac software which can read the count from your camera body."
so I think I did everything correctly, please correct me of not, but that was the message I got from the website
it's not working...I hope I'm doing it right... br... (show quote)

My experience is that Canon is not supported by camerashuttercount. Nikon is, mabe some others, but not Canon dslr,s.
The one for $2.99 looks good, but you have to have Windows 7 Sp1 or later.
Or Mac 10. 6.8 or later.
