Hi Hogs - I have found that the titled lens is a bit too 'top heavy' for my new d750. what would you replace it with ? Looking for good image quality 24-85, or 120 or what dya think. Needs to be physically smaller/lighter than current lens. Doesn't have to be Nikon but i'm obviously thinking 24-120 or 24-85 - unless you can come up with a more attractive offering.

I'm considering getting a 35-70mm Nikon. They're available in the $300 range. They weigh 23.8 oz compared with 31.7 for the 24-70mm.

If you want F/2.8, you're not going to find many lightweights.

guess thats why dxomark recommends 24-120 for the D810 and nikon packages it with the 810.

You can pick up a 24-85mm Nikon at Cameta Camera, refurbished, for $299 which is half the cost of new. Light weight and very sharp. Pro's like David Busch use this as a walk around. I would definitely hold on to the 24-70mm because it may be one you grow to like as you develop. If you want more range, go for the 24-120mm. Just because thes lenses are lower cost does not mean they are lower quality. You need to decide if weight is just too much for you in the 24-70 mm lens. I am sure you would have many takers on this site should you decide to sell the 24-70.

Think positive.
Lets pretend they are purging the stock of D810's/24-120's so they can announce a 48mpx sony sensor mirrorless full frame.

There is an older lens that I do like, and it doesn't bark -

The Nikkor 28-015 F3.5-4.5 - my copy is quite good, and it does macro at 1:2. These are available for around $150. If it breaks, I just get another one because just about any repair will cost more than the lens. And it does work nicely on my D800.

Huh? I find the 24-120/4 to be an excellent performer. And yes i own a 24-70 as well. I find the 24-120 to be almost as good optically as the 24-70, other than a bit more distortion at certain focal lengths.

An ecellent one lens solution for a walk around kit.

I had the 24-120 and didn't care for it. Too soft at certain ranges. Possibly, I just got a bad one. I like very much the 24-85 lens that comes with the D600/610. I would be glad to take the 24-70 off your hands at a fair price.

If it doesn't balance well, why give up arguably one of the best lenses made? Go in the other direction and add a battery pack to the d750, you'll be back in balance!

I see some knocks on the 24-120 and I think the negative comes from earlier versions of this lens which some reviewers call one of the three worst lenses Nikon ever made. The latest version the constant f4 design has gotten pretty good reviews and the people I've talked to that own one say it never leaves their camera!

What IQ issues? Could it be the user who has the problem? Like anything new, it has to be learned. Expecting great results right out of the box and not getting them can be frustrating. I think the user has to decide what fits their needs best and then work with that. I would have no issues whatsoever with the results of the 24-120/4 if this posted outcome is what one can expect. Very nice bokeh as well.
